Freight and Passenger Run

Event begins immediately following the Sunday Flight.

First of all, let’s cover the required files list for this flight.  These files are mandatory – you must have them installed on your system.

  • The aircraft will be the Brian Gladden Beech Volpar available in the CC Downloads section.  Be sure to transfer the gauges from the fs9\aircraft\Volpar\gauges folder to your fs9\gauges folder.
  • The scenery is the awesome Glacier Bay package available on Flightsim.com and Avsim.   The file names to search for are:   glbayv2a.zip  and  glbayv2b.zip.  These are large downloads – 56 megs and 85 megs respectively, but ‘you get what you pay for’  in terms of file size.  This package covers a large area in the northern panhandle of Alaska and includes accurate mesh, shorelines, landclass, airports and a whole lot of beautiful eye candy.

Now, on to the particulars for this adventure.

The CCB_004.zip file contains the following:

  • CCB_004 Briefing     This briefing document.
  • CCB_004 Briefing_files  folder    Contains images for this document.
  • CCB_004.fsn     FSNav flight plan.     Move or copy this file to your fs9\modules\FSNavigator\plan folder.
  • CCB_004 VFR Skagway to Juneau.PLN     FS9 GPS flight plan.  Move or copy this file to your  My Documents\Flight Simulator Files folder.
  • CCB_004-Sectional.jpg    A partial sectional chart roughly describing our route.

The Adventure

We have a reasonably easy flight today.  We’re going to depart Skagway with passengers, mail and freight and deliver them to two Canadian airfields, one in the Yukon Territory and one in British Columbia.  The weather is going to be nice for sight seeing with scattered fair weather cumulus and 20 mile visibility.  There will be a fairly stiff breeze, though.  The total time for this adventure is about 2 hours.

PAGY Skagway to CFA4 Carcross – Flight Time about 30 minutes

Depart on Runway 2  and fly straight up the valley, following the GPS track.  You’ll need to climb at 1100-1200 feet per minute to 3500’ msl to clear the ridge at the top of the valley.  See if you can spot the train on the RR tracks during this leg.  The GPS flight plan will take you right into a short final for Carcross.  See the images below for a little preview of the approach and directions to taxi to parking.  The runway heading is 047 degrees for runway 5 and the field elevation is 2178’ msl.

CFA4 Carcross to CYSQ Atlin   Flight Time about 25 minutes

Depart runway 5 and cruise at 3500’ to Atlin.  Follow the GPS track for this easy and scenic flight.  Once again, the flight plan will take you to a short base leg and final for runway 36.  The runway heading is 001 degrees and the field elevation is 2349’ msl.  As above, see the pics below for help.

CYSQ Atlin to PAJN Juneau International    Flight time about 45 minutes

Depart runway 36 and immediately turn fairly hard right to intercept the track.  Initial cruise altitude is 3500’ msl to Fix27. At that point begin a 700’/minute climb to 6600’ msl.  Remain at 6600’ until about 5 miles from Fix30. Once there, begin a 700’/minute descent to 1000’ msl.  Follow the track around the point and turn up the channel to Juneau.  We’ll pass right over downtown on our way to PAJN.  The flight plan will take us straight in to runway 26.  The approach heading is 258 degrees and the elevation is 19’ msl.   Once you’re down, taxi to the location below.
