Medical Evac

Event begins immediately following the Sunday Flight.  A second running of this flight will occur on Thursday, May 17th at 1900 UTC  (1400 ET (US)).

First of all, let’s cover the required files list for this flight.  These files are mandatory – you must have them installed on your system.

  • The aircraft will be the Bill & Lynn Lyons PA-22 Tripacer (wheels) available in the CC Downloads section.
  • The scenery is the awesome Glacier Bay package available on Flightsim.com and Avsim.   The file names to search for are:   glbayv2a.zip  and  glbayv2b.zip.  These are large downloads – 56 megs and 85 megs respectively, but ‘you get what you pay for’  in terms of file size.  This package covers a large area in the northern panhandle of Alaska and includes accurate mesh, shorelines, landclass, airports and a whole lot of beautiful eye candy.
  • The scenery files included in this package:  move or copy the Com Central Bush Flights folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder. This adds Tatshenshini River Village and runway, and emergency vehicles at PAYA. If you haven’t already installed Com Central Bush Flights scenery from previous flights, then be sure to go into your Scenery Library and activate this scenery.

Now, on to the particulars for this adventure.

The CCB_005.zip file contains the following:

  • CCB_005 Briefing     This briefing document.
  • CCB_005 Briefing_files  folder    Contains images for this document.
  • CCB_005.fsn     FSNav flight plan.     Move or copy this file to your fs9\modules\FSNavigator\plan folder.
  • CCB_005 VFR Yakutat Emergency.PLN      FS9 GPS flight plan.  Move or copy this file to your  My Documents\Flight Simulator Files folder.
  • CCB_005-Sectional.jpg    A partial sectional chart roughly describing our route.
  • Com Central Bush Flights folder    Contains scenery for Tatshenshini River Village and PAYA.  Move or copy this folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder and activate it in the fs9 Scenery Library if needed. Overwrite if prompted.

The Adventure

There has been an accident in Tatshenshini River Village.  Two children, aged 9 and 14, were apparently stacking firewood when the pile collapsed on them, causing multiple fractures and contusions.  Fortunately, one of the residents there was trained as an Army medic and has provided first aid and stabilized the patients.  Our task is to first take on two EMTs as passengers to monitor the patients on the flight to PAYA, fly to the village, load the patients and their parents and fly them as gently as possible to PAYA (Yakutat) for ground transport to the hospital there.  Unfortunately, the weather isn’t the greatest.  Visibility is limited and winds are strong and gusting.  Above 2500’ msl there is strong turbulence, so we’ll have to remain in the valleys to give our patients a fairly smooth ride.  Add to that that the landing strip at the village is only 850 feet long and we have our work cut out for us.

The Flight

Here’s an overview of our approximate flight path for today:

Cruise Altitude:  1500’ msl or as required

Cruise Speed:   135 kias

    Power Settings:   25”hg Manifold Pressure

A57 Alsek River to Tatshenshini River Village - Flight Time about 35 minutes

First of all, pay special attention to your engine and prop during your pre-flight.  We’re going to be pushing these aircraft hard to minimize the time in flight.  Taxi to and depart from runway 6.  There’s going to be a strong crosswind and the trees close in on both sides of the strip at the departure end, so be careful!  Climb to 1500’ msl and follow the GPS (FSNav) track up Tatshenshini river.  When about 7-8nm from Fix07, climb to 2000’ msl.  At Fix10, climb to 2100-2200’ msl to avoid a hill and slow to 60-65 knots for the approach the the Village landing strip.  It’s very difficult to spot (see below) so make your approach at 10 - 15 knots above stall speed (55 – 60 knots) and be ready to deal with a direct crosswind from the right. Get all 4 notches of flaps down before turning final to keep your speed down during the descent to the runway. Descend quickly as soon as you turn final and flatten out your flight path to help bleed off airspeed before you get to the threshhold.  The flight plan track will put you right on a short final approach to runway 28.  Taxi to the apron to load the patients and their parents..

Tatshenshini River Village to PAYA Yakutat - Flight Time about 45 minutes

Once your aircraft is loaded and the patients and passengers are securely strapped in, taxi to runway 10 to depart straight back down the valley.  Set your flaps to takeoff (2 notches), lock your brakes and throttle up to full power.  The crosswind will now be directly from your left on departure.  Climb to 2000’ msl and follow the track down the valley.  At Fix20 we’ll depart the river valley and cut over Novatak and Yakutat Glaciers to shorten the flight to PAYA. At Fix21 climb to 2300’ msl to clear the glacier. Be careful to stay below 2500’ to stay out of the heavy turbulence at and above that altitude!  At Fix25 descend to 1500’msl.  The track will take you into short right base and final legs for runway 2 at PAYA.  Land as gently as possible and taxi to the rally point on the ramp.  You’ll see 2 police cars and an ambulance waiting there.

That’s it!  I hope you enjoyed the flight, and I hope to see you again in future Com Central Bush Flight adventures!
