Remote Camp Resupply

Event begins immediately following the Sunday Flight.  A second running of this flight will occur on Thursday, May 31st at 1900 UTC  (1400 ET (US)).

First of all, let’s cover the required files list for this flight.  These files are mandatory – you must have them installed on your system.

·        The aircraft will be the Milton Shupe Beech D18 Amphibian available in the CC Downloads section.

·        The scenery is the awesome Glacier Bay package available on Flightsim.com and Avsim.   The file names to search for are:   glbayv2a.zip  and  glbayv2b.zip.  These are large downloads – 56 megs and 85 megs respectively, but ‘you get what you pay for’  in terms of file size.  This package covers a large area in the northern panhandle of Alaska and includes accurate mesh, shorelines, landclass, airports and a whole lot of beautiful eye candy.

·        The scenery files included in this package:  move or copy the Com Central Bush Flights folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder. This adds three fictitious camps to the Glacier Bay scenery. If you haven’t already installed Com Central Bush Flights scenery from previous flights, then be sure to go into your Scenery Library and activate this scenery.

·        Please read and follow all of the instructions in the Com Central Bush Flying Flights – More Required Files and Instructions  forum thread.

Now, on to the particulars for this adventure.

The CCB_007.zip file contains the following:

  • CCB_007 Briefing     This briefing document.
  • CCB_007 Briefing_files  folder    Contains images for this document.
  • CCB_007.fsn     FSNav flight plan.     Move or copy this file to your fs9\modules\FSNavigator\plan folder.
  • Flight Simulator Files folder   Contains GPS flight plan and saved flight to begin this adventure. Three files in this folder are: CCB_007 VFR Carcross to Yakutat.PLN , CCB_007, and CCB007.wx.  Move or copy this folder to your  My Documents folder and overwrite when prompted..
  • CCB_007-Sectional.jpg    A partial sectional chart roughly describing our route.
  • Com Central Bush Flights folder    Adds three fictitious camps to the Glacier Bay scenery.  Move or copy this folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder and activate it in the fs9 Scenery Library if needed. Overwrite if prompted.

The Adventure

Our mission this week is simple.  We’ll load up our D18’s with supplies, mail, and various parcels and packages and deliver them to three remote camps west of Carcross.  The first two landings are pretty easy, but the third at Alsek River is very tricky. Pay particular attention to the detailed briefing on the approach and landing at Alsek River Camp. When we are finished with deliveries, we’ll fly to Yakutat.

The Flight

Here’s an overview of our approximate flight path for today:

Cruise Altitude:  4200’ msl or as required

Cruise Speed:   158 kias

Power Settings:   28”hg Manifold Pressure @ 2000 rpm

CFA4 Carcross to Kasawa Lake Camp - Flight Time about 25 minutes

Load your aircraft with supplies, mail and packages and taxi to runway 23.  Depart straight out and climb to 4200’ msl as you follow the course line.  At Fix09 climb to 5200’ to clear the terrain.  You can descend back to 4200’ at Fix12.  Kasawa Lake is huge – you’ll have plenty of room to land.  Taxi to the dock or beach your pontoons – don’t taxi up on the beach!  The ground is very soft and you’re very likely to get stuck!

CFA4 Runway 23- Departure heading 228 degrees  Elevation 2178’ msl,  2200’ x 75’ gravel

Fix22 Kasawa Lake  Elevation 2959’ msl

Kasawa Lake Camp to Devilliate Creek Camp - Flight Time about 10 minutes

Taxi out into the lake and take off into the wind (about 300 degrees).  Make an immediate right turn to buttonhook back onto the course line into Devilliate Creek valley.  Climb to 5400’ right away. At Fix26 throttle back and start lowering flaps. The pond appears right about at Fix26.  There’s plenty of room to land, as long as you don’t waste time slowing.  We’ll be overflying the camp on final approach.  Land and taxi back to the camp to unload.  Once again, the ground is a bit mushy here, so just beach your aircraft.

Fix22 Kasawa Lake  Elevation 2959’ msl

Fix28 Devilliate Creek Pond  Elevation 4376’ msl

Devilliate Creek Camp to Alsek River Camp - Flight Time about 30 minutes

You’ll be able to turn around and depart straight down the course line here.  Climb to 5000’ to clear terrain on this leg. The approach and landing at Alsek River is tricky. Refer to the images below.  At Fix42, begin to slow and lose altitude. Fly down the narrow cut shown below and plan to be near ground level and less than 90 knots when you reach the river. Turn right at Fix44 and get flaps full down and slow to 65 knots by the sharp right-hand bend in the river. Turn hard right to line up on the landing area.  Throttle up during the turn so you don’t stall.  You’ll only have a couple of thousand feet of straight river to land in, so put it down immediately.  Taxi to the camp to unload.  The ground here is firm, so you can taxi on shore.

Fix28 Devilliate Creek Pond  Elevation 4376’ msl

Fix46 Alsek River  Elevation 1442’ msl

Alsek River Camp to PAYA Yakutat - Flight Time about 35 minutes

Taxi back to the bend in the river to depart into the wind.  Execute a hard, climbing left turn on departure to intercept the track.  You’ll need to climb pretty hard here, but it’s easily do-able.  Climb up Fisher Glacier to Hubbard Glacier.  The maximum altitude you’ll need is about 5200’ near Fix54.  Once you’ve made the turn South, you can descend down Hubbard Glacier to the sea.  1500’msl is a good cruise altitude for the rest of the flight to Yakutat.  Runway 29 will be the active runway at PAYA, and the course track reflects this with short right base and final legs to the runway.  Taxi to the location depicted below.

Fix46 Alsek River  Elevation 1442’ msl

PAYA Runway 29- Approach heading 288 degrees,  Elevation 32’ msl,  7726’ x 150’ asphalt

That’s it!  I hope you enjoyed the flight, and I hope to see you again in future Com Central Bush Flight adventures!
