A question a little off topic about scanners
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: A question a little off topic about scanners

I'm hoping some one hear might be able to steer me in the right direction.

As some already know I have a pretty extensive library of TM's and FM's for the Patton series of tanks. I am wanting to digitized them in PDF form but scanning them on my cheapo HP just doesn't really work. After so many pages (20+) it craps out before exporting it to my computer with the "Not enough memory capacity" warning. I'm looking for something that could handle up to 600 plus pages (a thousand would be even better). Either that or someone smart enough who could tell me how to avoid this error (if possible). I don't need auto load/feed or anything fancy, just something that could handle scanning the equivalent to a 1000 page document.

It would make it much more easier for me to share my information from my library when I get requests.

Have you considered creating one .pdf file for each 10-12 pages?
Then they could be merged in a single, large .pdf file.

I am pretty positive I could handle the merge for you if you can't do it by yourself.

Right now my main PC is dying (one RAM slot burned out) and I am waiting for a new one. I will be up and running again within a week or two. You could try to create 4-6 small .pdf, and see how it goes. Either merge them by yourself,or send them my way.

Joe,

Massimo has the right idea. A full copy of Adobe Acrobat is going to be much cheaper than a production-quality scanner. Once you have Acrobat, scan the manuals 10 pages at a time, then use Acrobat to knit them together.

Joe

I've 'digitalized' a number of TMs & FMs (duh...on the Ontos!!) as well as working on a couple of off the wall draft TMs and lengthy AARs.

Although a bit time consuming I scan individual pages in JPG then compile them. The larger items which overwhelmed my computer ( & pdf writing program), I broke down in sub-sections (ie chapters). It seemed to work decently enough. The benefit of smaller sub-sections is ability to email, which in the case of several of my digitalized efforts, turned out to be just the right format.

Of course I know there is a more 'professional' way of pdf converting hard copy documents / manuals but it tends to cost a bit.

HTH
Regards
Don

I never thought of purchasing Acrobat,

Definitely will try that route since the thought of purchasing a new scanner really doesn't fit in my budget right now.

Thanks everyone!
