Post subject: Rhythmic stutter

I have been experiencing a rhythmic stutter about once per second. Just a slight hesitation once per second. Has anyone else experienced this?

Gigabyte K8NS pro using onboard audio set to basic
AMD Athlon64 3500+
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with Catalyst 5.3
2Gig PC3200 RAM

Assuming that you have all the latest updates for drivers etc, I would disable the sound and see if it clears up, often onboard sound is just so-so at best. Another thing to check is your page file size, although if thats
the problem it is usually less regular in nature.

DOH!...didn't see the machine spec's........are these stutters in multi-player? what type of internet connection do you have? Are you running an anti-virus program and if so which one? Are you running the XP firewall or another firewall?...and if you are running another firewall have you disabled the XP firewall? Are you using a router? how big and how full is/are your hard drives? have you de-fragmented them lately?...Is your puter over heating? what size power supply are you running?...the questions could go on and on lol......

bottom line is we are here to help, the more information you can give us the easier and quicker we can help.

This dysfunction is global throughout the sims. Both online and off. Using the task manager window, I see CPU usage pretty steady at about 76% and betting up to 97-98% at times in high action scenes (flak, explosions, and such) The cyclical exhibition of the problem is what puzzles me. Temp is not a problem with four 80mm case fans, fan on GPU and CPU. 41-47C during gaming is average. 550W power supply handles everthing well enough. Hard drives are dual WD 80G Caviars in striped array at 40% capacity and defrag runs weekly.
I am of the opinion that it is graphic based in nature, as I have not noticed any degradation of performance in any other aspect. Additionally I have tried using GameXP to cut out unnecessary services, but to no avail. The problem persists. rhythmic rhythmic rythmic AAAAAARRRRGGGG

S! Stepchild..are you using the 5.3 drivers with the catalyst control center? If so, try running the 5.3 drivers with the standard control panel(this will require a re-install of the drivers). I have found that the Catalyst Control Center in many of the latest driver sets uses an unusually high amount of resources which is caused by the umpteen tweaks that the utility runs....you don't need them. The only other thing I can think of is to run the Advanced Samrtgart utilty found in the program files/ATI Technologies/control panel folder and make sure all the settings for PCI settings and AGP settings are set to "on" and to check in bios to make sure that AGP is set as the primary and that AGP is set to 8X.

Hope this helps...

Hi Stepchild

My best shot would be its a PSU problem... If the fault is global regardless of load on CPU , GPU or memory it must be something outside the data circuit... this could mean PSU or maybe a motherboard with voltage regulation problems... can you run a harware monitor program that checks voltages in real time?

Best of luck bro

Sly

Well it seems the desktopwas the culprit! I hadn't really noticed, but I had a LOT of "stuff" on my desktop. Organized it all, cut everything down to shortcuts, defragged and BINGO. No more stutter. I can resume ridding the skies of people who are not me. LOL Thanks for all the help guys. ~S~ Ray
