The "flying car" will never see the light of day...and not for technical reasons.

Regulatory agencies (lke say, the U.S. FAA) are not particularly fond of general aviation for all sorts of reasons now (workload, risk, pilot proficiency, etc.). Governments in general will never approve of a significant expansion of airworthy vehicles and air traffic for all of the reasons above, plus a few others (security among them). An increase in GA traffic (or however one wants to define this) will never be tolerated and will either be legislated out of existence (if the technical means were to exist) or requirementsregulations made so onerous so as to accomplish the same thing.

There will be no families of Jetsons zipping around the countryside and those with the means to participate in GA will still want aircraft of a capacity greater than a dual purpose vehicle (with it's road crashworthiness issues) can ever provide. Weight will be no small factor here, to say nothing of a general hostility on the part of governments and a pretty good cross-section of the population.

I hope it doesn't.
Imagine all the eejits you see on the roads today, in the air.
And the potential security implications.

That right there is the reason it will never become mainstream. The masses can't operate a car with four wheels on the ground safely most of the time so once the vehicle leaves the ground it will only make the problem that much worse.
