So, moving to Germany...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: So, moving to Germany...

In two weeks. Where should I go? Lots of Museums obviously, but wondering what there are for German/US Base monuments/displays or even Military Open Houses held yearly? We'll be in Munich area and am definitely looking forward to it!

Cheers,
Jim

I love Munich! I can only talk about museums:

No AFVs over there, but Deutsches Museum is great, in 3 separated location:
www.deutsches-museum.de/en

Sinsheim and Speyer are quite close:
www.technik-museum.de/

Full, in Switzerland, it's not that far away, it's just across the border:
www.militaer-museum.ch/

Munster is a bit far away, but is a must:

Here are two good links for military museums.
Have fun looking at the websites.

Lots to see in Germany.
In the eastern states there are many single Russian tanks and Momuments to be seen.
A real surprise for me was the Russian Cemetery in Baruth with two T-34/85's. South of Zossen / Berlin
Of course in Berlin the 2x T-34/76's near the Brandenburg Gate, and in the easter part of town the Museum in Karlshorst.
A bit further east the Russian Cemetery & Museum in Seelow.

Open house days at US Army posts are pretty rare now. There are lots of AFVs on display on main post at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, and they do have an annual German-American Fest when the post is open to visitors (I think it's going on right now, or maybe this weekend), but I'd be rather careful about taking pictures there.

There are several privately-owned museums that have a wealth of armored vehicles. These are some of the best:

Well, if you are in the Munich area soon, than of course don't miss out on the Oktoberfest.
It actually starts on 20 Sept so don't miss out and go the end of Oct!!
Its all over by then!

Just scroll down for info in English.

www.oktoberfest2014.com/

There are others you can visit, just check the Tourist Office, etc.

...and don't just think "Germany". You'll be in the middle of Western Europe, which in scale is about like the larger states in the American midwest/Rockies. You can cover a lot of ground in not much time (good train systems), and you'll be bordering countries with lots to offer. And very close to non-bordering countries (which tend to get smaller as you go east/south.

Chances are you can find some good "guides/hosts" here.

Thanks All! Oh yeah, my Wife's colleagues have already got tickets (tables) for Oktoberfest! I plan on seeing the BotB/Ardennes area and of course France, Holland, Belgium etc. We'll be there three, perhaps up to five years so should have time to see a few things, maybe hit a few model shows Wink .

Cheers,
Jim

Being in Munich you could also easily reach Italy from Brenner's pass. Plenty of nice places in that direction: Bolzano, Verona, Mantova then Venice. Rovereto is along the way and host an interesting Museum, mostly on WW I:
www.museodellaguerra.it/

Better to go in spring/summer, since the "artillery cave" is closed in winter.

Excellent.
All the links are excellent.

Of course using the links I mentioned gives you a good help in planning your trip routes.

The Ardennen has many single monuments with tanks and guns & it has absolutely beautiful scenery.

Enjoy your stay.

Jim, my coverage of Germany is patchy to say the least, but you might find it of interest:

Hi Mike
When did you visit the T-34s in Baruth? I have only ''last noted'' data from 2004.

Regards,
Lesley

I have photos I took in May 95 and Aug 03.
In May 95 it all looked very clean and well kept. The T-34's had their numbers (300 & 301) & stars on the turrets with several smaller red stars on the barrels. Road wheels with white trim.
In Aug 03 it was all overgrown and in need of upkeep. No signs of the numbers & stars on the tanks.

A link to Baruth....

PS:As Trevor mentioned above his books are a great travel companion.
