Post subject: New kit

On the way soon.

Current build is 6 years old and the hard drive's dying as I'm using it.
As I use it to run my business as well now, I've used this as an excuse to order some new bits.

Once again I have opted for the 'overkill' approach to computing by choosing:-

Intel Core i7 i7-4790K CPU (Quad Core 4GHz, straight out of the box, Socket H3 LGA-1150);
(Cooler Master RR-212E-16PK-R1 Hyper 212 Evo "Ultra High Performance, 4 Direct Contact Heat Pipes, Universal CPU Cooler" Black Fan);

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX Motherboard (4x DDR3, 6x USB3.0, 8x USB2.0, HDMI, DVI-I, DSUB);

2 x Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1866C9R Vengeance Pro Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1866Mhz CL9 XMP Performance Desktop Memory Kit Red
(32Gb total);

and a Samsung 2.5-Inch 1 TB 850 EVO Solid State Drive.

Installing Win7 Home Prem with the intention of upgrading to Win10 asap.

I am cannibalising my current build for its':-

Case (CoolerMaster Scout) which will need a little bit of renovation at the same time;

Soundcard (Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music) not found a better one yet;

Graphic Card (Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX650Ti PCI-e 3.0 2Gb GDDR5);

Power Supply (OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w - modular);

Display (Viewsonic VA2226w 1680x1050) - might double-up or expand this later.

Still have 3 x 1Tb SATA drives working too, so my total storage could be 4Tb.
In a home pc I no longer use for gaming.
LOL

COMING TO A SIGNATURE NEAR YOU SOON!

DUDE!!!!!!

NICE Choices!!!!!

I didn't write anything about it at the time (didn't wanna brag 'bout it until it was running and then was having too much fun once it was) but I did a new PC build back in March with the following (copied from my newegg order history):

CPU/Mobo/RAM/Cooling:
Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0 GHz
GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD5H LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel BXTS13X Water/Liquid Cooling Thermal Solution for Socket LGA1150
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model CMZ16GX3M2A2133C10

Storage:
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E250B/AM
Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Graphics & Power:

SAPPHIRE DUAL-X Radeon R9 280 DirectX 11.2 100373-2L 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express
Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-900 900W ATX12V v2.3

As you can see it's very much the same selections as yours in terms of CPU, Mobo and memory brand. I have been waiting to try liquid cooling and read good things about Intel's own options, and I figured if the CPU mfr. puts their name on it, why not.

You are going to LOVE booting from that SSD. 14 seconds from power on to Windows desktop. Price points were different 9 months ago or I would have loved to go with a 1TB SSD. Samsung = good stuff buddy, excellent support software that it comes with!

If I had to do it over again I would have ditched my misdirected brand loyalty for AMD graphics cards and went with an NVidia 970 GTX based card. Turns out that FSX higher res settings and AMD cards with latest drivers and Anisotropic Filtering above 2X cause strange graphic artifacts to slowly show up over the course of a flight. Oh well Santa is coming so I hope to rectify that soon....

Anyway you are gonna have one hell of a system that can chomp up & spit out anything you throw at it. Way to go!

Wow!
How wierd is that.
Almost identical.

How did yr SSD fit onto the mobo?
Any case mounting challenges?

It's certainly gonna chomp up and spit out anything I throw at it these days;
I don't game any more and only use it to run bits of my business, email, accounts and purchase ordering.
I'm waiting for the time I can restart writing and audio editing, but it'll probably have been replaced by then again.
LOL

I would've gone with water this time (still dying to try it) but again, it's overkill for me now and it's situation in my office doesn't have the space.
Sufficient clearance for good air circulation is bad enough.

I might could be tempted to check out your power supply.
Sounds interesting.

(I confess my secret desire to throw all this into a game of CFS1 again.
heheheh
Be lovely to see Shadow smoke & flames at +300 fps and in Hi-Def)

I'm thinking the specs are so similar becuase we must have both done the same lengthy homework. I started out by picking my CPU and board first, then went through the list of mfr. recommended RAM looking for the sweet spot in $/performance.

My SSD was a 2.5" form factor not an M.2 or mSATA, so I mounted it in a drive bay and just used a SATA cable going to one of the 6Gb/sec SATA ports on the motherboard. At the time, specs for such an arrangement didn't indicate that any loss of performance would be incurred by doing that, and it runs like a striped-@ss ape! Be sure to use the Samsung software to optimize the drive performance.

There were no other mounting or build issues whatsoever. The Intel liquid cooling is compact enough to all fit in a Cooler Master Mid-Tower case, that I purchased locally (kinda picky about my cases, gotta see 'em in person before I buy).

Between the cooling and the ultra-quiet fans on the ATI video card, this PC is so quiet it's freaky, and is a nice change from loud fans that sound like I have a helicopter squadron stationed under my desk.

You're gonna have no worries and lots of smiles. VERY stable stuff. Smile

And I'm just gonna mention in passing that for like $20 US the Hurricanes in IL2 Cliffs of Dover are pretty effective birds particularly against the '109 (Dammit). Since I seem to recall you mentioning that particular bird in CFS1.

Post subject: Re: New kit

lol yeah, I did try IL2 and flew a few different birds.
For me it was a leap too far ahead though.
Much more realistic, but much less fun.
I preferred my old EURO_Shades and EW_Pooflinga days in CFS1.

Too much fiddling about with instruments all the time in IL2.
I had 'em all set on macros in CFS1 and could leave 'em almost the same for the whole game.

Much easier.
I'm not what you might call a 'realist'.
heheheh

Everything's arrived now, so I'll do the build over the weekend (if my business allows me just a few moments - lol).

Hey Stoops.
Did you have to buy a separate connection cable for your SSD?
I don't seem to have the right one for it come with either the drive or mobo, which seems a little dumb to my mind (which already has issues of its' own.).

No, not that I recollect... it's certainly not on my Newegg order history, and the Gigabyte Mobo should come with a couple or three SATA-III cables. So I just plugged it in like any other drive. The only thing I bought "special" for it was a 2.5" mounting bracket, which I ended up not needing since my case actually had a 2.5" mounting bay.

Here are the specs for the exact Samsung SSD drive I purchased, which is connected via a SATA cable to the first SATA-III 6Gb/sec port on my motherboard:

Ah thanks.
I re-checked mine and the connectors are slightly different to those I'm used to.
If you look at them quickly, they almost look bare (like a PCI-e card connector).
The pic' in your link made me realise they are actually the same and have the same shaping on the ends.
I know where I am again now.

Getting nervous about starting now.

I could... if I had the time, the software, and the equipment.
Just found my old FFB2 as I was clearing out part of (what will be) my new home-office/study yesterday.
Hard to believe I bought it over fifteen years ago.
*sigh

Post subject: Re: New kit

I've uncovered a novel (but recognised) issue with this build.

Everything worked fine but after a few hours I started getting a 'Blue Screen of Death' every few minutes.
No driver/device issues/conflicts found.
Temps all okay (maxing out at 25°C !!!).

Googled the error messages and stumbled across a problem with Gigabyte applications.
Uninstalled their App Centre bundle.
No more BSoD's!

Never heard of this before but it worked for me and everyone else who had asked about it on the forum.
Thought I'd post in case anyone else finds a similar issue with their Gigabyte software.
