What does this beautiful engine belong to?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This engine is the first "new" one I have seen like this. If this were on display at the SEMA show in Vegas, I'm sure people would have been lined up to check it out. Vehicle in backgroung probably ruins the whole question. Any BLUFOR coming to NTC had better be careful, civilians have been working all year during the 11th ACR's deployment to upgrade and repairs the OPFOR fleet. This little baby will make some TC and driver, very happy. I believe Doug has even better pictures of this engine from more angles, as well has other vehicle engines/tranmissions.

Jeff,
I believe that is the engine going in the M113A3's (or at least, current OSV versions). It differs from M113's of old because it has a turbo and the old ones weren't (only the Sheridan had 'em). Here, you see it without the rest of the power-pack (final drive). I have pics at home of it as you do..and a "used" one next to it with the tranny/drives hooked up. I'll try to post those tonight or tomorrow.
(In the pic of the front of the new OSV's all you see is the sparkling new tranny assembly and not the engine...I was gonna' post that anyway to amaze Roy Lingle.)

D.

Well gee, shouldn't we ask Mr Sparks?

Seems to me this little 'honey' can get us to Mars, or something like that... I read somewhere it would power the 'Astro-Gavin'.

HA HA HA HA.... Mr. Green

So, Jeff's pic is as good as any of mine...I just got more angle. Here is that engine installed in a new 113-based OSV (totally different than what Roy and I recall looking in here!)

Here is the same engine, used, with it's transmission/drives attached:

...and this, I believe, is a Bradley engine:

Hi Folks!

VERY INTERESTING!

What is the top speed of a A3 with that power pack?

That first photo of the hatch open and looking at the new set up, sure isn't MY OLD BOOM-BOOM!

Sgt, Scouts Out!

Roy,
I thought you'd like that pic with the "hood up".

Funny you ask...Jeff and I were watching an OSV (M113A3-based) with this engine on a test run of the same field over which I drove the M2 half-track. We both commented on it's speed, which was pretty darn snappy. Like a new Sheridan on Nitrous with a reflashed chip! I mean, it was quick...and smooth while doing it, as in effortless. I looked at it and saw "recon vehicle" with the right equipment...and alluded to this over in the XM800 thread.

Gentlemen,
Here is what I have on the "A3" series of the M113. All new APC's produced since 1987 and all converted vehicles since 1989 are the A3 varient, the U.S. production of new M113A3's was completed in 1992.
-Combat Weight- 27,200lbs (13.6 tons)
- Has M19 infared parascope for driver
- Hull is made of Rolled 5083/5086 H32 aluminum armor, 1.5 inch thick on front slope.
- Engine is a General Motors 6V53T, 6 cylinder, 2 cycle, turbosupercharged diesel that has 275hp@2,800rpm and 627 ft-lbs@1,600 rpm
- Transmission is Allison X-200-4 or X-200-4A, with 4 speeds forward, 2 reverse
- Steering is a hydrostatic yoke
- Performance is 40mph roads, 3.6mph water
- Max trench 66inch
- vertical obstacle 24inch
- max grade 60%
- side grade 30%
- cruiseing range is 300mi on roads (on 95 gal fuel capacity, thats roughly 3.15 mpg)
As a note, the new, more powerful engine and transmission were referred to as the RISE (Reliability Improvements for Selected Equipment) package.
I found this info when researching the M113 series of vehicles for the two display vehicles here on post that are A2's.
