Roll Call for Memorial Day Weekend Gathering at Fort Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Other news may or may not be on the horizon, but its only 2 weeks away, so I thought I'd start a semi-official roll call. So far I think we have:

Dontos
Tumbleweed
Mark Holloway
Bob Smart
Neil Baumgardner
Doug Kibbey

Any one else care to join us?

Where is everyone staying? My thought was Elizabethtown (aka E-town). Radcliff is closer, but there's not a whole lot in Radcliff and my experience is that you end up going to E-town anyway for dinner...

I'd be there, as my friend is graduating from Cav OSUT at the same time, but I'm gonna be in South America. When I go to Knox for work, I always stay at the E-Town Hampton Inn, which is only about a 15-20 minute drive from the gate. Then again, I drive like a Floridian...

Yes it was, but there is still a gathering of AFV News members planned. Hopefully Don & co from Knox will give us a good look around "behind the scenes," etc.

I don't know yet, but I may be working there on Saturday. The Best Western Gold Vault Inn in Radcliff is a good place to stay. It's close to the Wilson Road gate and not far from the parking lot entrance to the musuem.

I'm in. Probably staying in E-town most of the time with maybe 1-2 nights in L'ville, depending (wife may run the 5K race and our anniversary is the 27th, so I'll be entertaining her that night). I'm coming in before she arrives, and leaving after she does.

My parents will be in from Florida, but we usually drive over to the park and see the displays and show.

I haven't seen the Op order for the Memorial Day activities yet which is strange. I've had the Armor Symposium one for quite some time.

The normal Memorial Day weekend event was cancelled: www.lifeofthesoldier.com

But the museum will still open, as far as I know at least!

Forthcoming information will 'clear the air' for the Weekend planned event.

Shawn, glad to have you. Here are the hotels I researched below.

As I said, in my opinion, you might as well stay in E-town vice the Gold Vault Inn in Radcliff. If you only go to Fort Knox, eat at the Burger King for breakfast, lunch & dinner, Gold Vault is the way to go. But if you want to get some real dinner, especially as a group, you basically have to hike over to E-town. I dont know of anything in Radcliff really other than the Hardees and lots of tattoo shops... Its a 10 plus mile hike to E-town, so if you eat dinner there, you might as well stay there instead of hiking right back to Radcliff. At least that was the lesson me & my friends learned when we visited in 2004.

In Radcliff

The Gold Vault Inn (3.7 miles from Knox)
Would have to call for rates since they're not a Best Western anymore...

In Elizabethtown

Holiday Inn Express (14.3 miles from Knox) $71/night
www.ichotelsgroup.com/...n/hd/eliky

Days Inn (14.3 miles from Knox) $50+/night
www.daysinn.com/DaysIn...andInfo=DI

Quality Inn (14.4 miles from Knox) $90/night
www.choicehotels.com/i...p;nchild=0

Hampton Inn (14.4 miles from Knox) $94/night
www.hamptoninn.com/en/...cn=ELIKYHX

Ramada Inn (14.5 miles from Knox) $67/night
www.ramada.com/Ramada/...andInfo=RA

Personally, I'm more in the Days Inn/Holiday Inn Express/Ramada Inn price range... I think Bob & I still need to make reservations... The last four are all very close to each other, not sure about the Holiday Inn Express... We dont necessarily need to stay at the same place, but could meet at one place before convoying/carpooling over to Knox.

Don, should folks plan for a two-day gathering (as opposed to the one-day formal event) - ie Saturday the formal life of the soldier event, followed by Sunday behind the scenes? Departures on Monday? Maybe we should put together an honest-to-goodness agenda for this gathering?

Right now we have?:

Dontos
Tumbleweed
Mark Holloway
Garry Redmon
Bob Smart
Neil Baumgardner
Doug Kibbey
Shawn
Sabot

This is actually a pretty good group!

Yes, I made the list twice. We'll both be there.

Hope we can get a group photo some time that weekend.

i think that most of us have multiple cameras, so a group shot is a definite.
the hotel rates sound far to me. i will call in a res. today.

i will, at least, be sure to let y'all know what hotel i will be at, and you can reach me thru the hotel or i can, via regular email, give out my
contact #. that way we can meet up-- carpool, dine as a group.

i am trying to get another friend of my who was a cav scout (M114 driver)to come and attend. he had talked briefly to roy about the "lingle" many years ago.

sounds like too much fun already! lock up your daughters...
