Sheridan Machine Guns in Viet Nam
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Interesting name..wasn't 'Stalking Rhino' the name of the unit or vehicle first equipped with some sort of night vision or sighting equipment on the Sheridan? I think I have an image of their patch around somewhere....

I thought is was you or Don that first posted it....

Here is a citation:

"SHERIDAN CREWS of the 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry now have their own unit patch, depicting a charging rhino with lightning in his eyes. The patch was designed by the Electro-Optical Systems, a Xerox Company, especially for the Sheridan tank crews. Heraldry of the patch reads: “Dauntless and tough describe the stalking rhino and his modern military counterpart, the army’s new Sheridan vehicle.

Here's the patch. I think I got the photo from A Trp 4/12 Cav website.

Regardless of it's record, the M551 is one bad looking armored vehicle!

You got that right, Jeff. Back in '71, from this very spot (in Potts Motor Park, Ft. Knox) I and a bunch of other AIT trainees (on M48A2's) got our first glimpse of Sheridan's coming back down Main Range Rd. there in a column. To a man, I think I can safely say we all stopped what we were doing and let out a collective "Ooooooh....." We had no idea what we were looking at, but it looked badass. Little did some of us suspect that we be IN that column a few weeks later.

This motor pool today is where the Marines training at Ft. Knox operate from. There were M1's, Strykers, and Brad's where we used to collect our M48's from.

It was weird being there again....

Hi Folks!

"Blood and Guts" Interesting name. I wonder if the 'B' is for B Troop, 1st Sqdn, 11th ACR during the early days under Col. Patton? I say early days because during his time he ordered all 50 cal gun shields painted with "11th Cav Country".

When I was with C Troop, we passed B Troop a couple of times. All their Sheridans had that twin 50 set up. Don't remember seeing one with a twin M73 set on the loader's hatch. While C Troop and G Troops had single 50s mounted in front of the loader's hatch, I don't remember see any B Troop vehicles with a machine gun in front of the loader's position. That is one of the VERY few photos I have ever seen of a twin 50 set up on a Sheridan. Now I can show people that at least one of them did have that set up.

As for the "The Stalking Rhinos" patch, the story I was told (by a tanker in C Troop, 11th ACR) was that when the Sheridans where first issued in Vietnam, each vehicle came with four of those patchs.

Some of my very old history,
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile
