On my trip to the beach
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: On my trip to the beach

Most folks going down to the ocean would take a camera to take pictures of teh scenerary on the sand right? Wink Well I found something safer to use the digital camera on with my wife along Wink

On the way down I used Neils list of AFV monuments to plan a side trip through Millsboro Deleware. After driving through what I saw of the town and not finding Ameriucan Legion post 28 with a tank in front of it I stopped at the Post office and asked "Can you direct me to American Legion" The clerk looked at me with a blank stare and said "Which one" "Post 28" (still no comprehension) "It has a tank in front of it." The lightbulb went on!
Turns out it is about 4 miles outside of the town, past the chicken factory.

I think this may be the serial number

6370? There was also a cast in serial number on the rear hull and a bunch of stamped numbers on the turret

Well the next evening we went out for crabcakes with my Brother and Sister in law and on the way to dinner I saw a sign for Berlin, Md. I thought I remembered Neils list saying there was a tank there at a VFW or American Legion so I asked how far out of our way it was. Not far and on the way back we found this

Now a barely readable plaque on it says it is an M4A2 so here is the Engine grill which should prove or disprove that

I've got more picture I can post later, all hatches were open so you can get a pretty good view of the inside.

When I looked at my hardcopy of Neils list that night I noticed Berlin, MD isn't on it so I'll have to figure where I remembered it from! Neil I'll send you details. I also want to run some of them by Joe DeMarco.

I tried to get pictures of the M60A1 at the NG Armory at Annapolis but after finely figuring how to get from the highway to the building they have the whole site inside a chainlink fence with all gates locked! So maybe some other time. But I'll take a Sherman and an M48A1 over an M60 anytime!

A weight classification of "45" seems a little light for a 48, but it looks fairly presentable.

Hey,
I love my M60's, somebody has too. I imagine Shermans were thought of the same way 40 years ago when they were all over the place. Now people wish some one captured more info on them when there were more around Smile

It's an A3. The grill doors on an A2 don't extend as far back to the hull rear nor the they as wide as the ones on this tank.

I promised some more shots of the M4 at Berlin MD. Here are some interior shots. I was dressed to go out with the family so I wasn't prepared to worm my way through hatches or lay on the deck to get pictures. So I just stuck the camera through some of the hatches and clicked. I went into the Legion and asked the Bartender if I could climb on the tank to take pictures for an internet armor discussion group. She told me the hatches are premaently open because kids were lifting them and getting hurt

First picture is looking aft through the drivers hatch

Second shot is looking across the transmission towards the asst drivers position

This picture I think is the loaders area from the drivers hatch (but I'm not really sure. )

This one is through the TC hatch toward the Gunners position.

Last M4 pic for now is of the drivers side of the transmission

Now another detail picture of the Millsboro DE M48A1. Is the slotted metal strip at the base of the turret ring normal? I don't remember seeing it before on other similar tanks? And notice the damaged return roller.
