T92 light tank kit on Ebay...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yes, but you should really just put down what is your true real maximum bid anyway. Only problem comes in when someone comes in at the last minute/second with a bid that is $10 higher and you reconsider what your true max bid is... Which I admit has happened to me. If your max bid is higher than the person behind those "sniper" programs, you still win...

Never mind the fact that Hunnicutt's usually go for half or so as they do on abebooks. If you bid you true max, and its less than its going for on abebooks, you win. Only way you can really "lose" is if someone actually pays more on Ebay than its available for on abebooks... And I cant remember ever seeing that happen.

Here's a good Abebooks example, a copy of Sherman on abebooks for $1113.69. At first I thought I was looking at a real steal... Until I noticed there was an extra digit!...

Every time I put in my 'true max bid' someone came in with minutes (or seconds) to go and topped it by just enough. After that happened several times in a row I figured it was more than just luck.

Instead of a hard stop time it might be fairer to have 'when there have been no bids for 5 minutes after stop time' the auction is over. This would give a chance to people who just by the 'electronic gods of the network' got queued in a microsecond behind someone else a chance. It still wouldn't help when bidding against Sniper programs though.


And as far as some of the outragous prices on Abebooks that's the same as foks that put things on Ebay with ridiculasly high minimum bids. but usually when there is a very high price on Abebooks there are several that are much lower. Whne the $1000.+ Sherman was there was it the only one? Remember Abebooks is a consortium of independent dealers so you aren't dealing with one shop, but many.

But his true max bid was probably more than that. Here's how Ebay works... Lets say for the purpose of discussion, the bidding starts at $100. You put down a "max bid" of $150. At the beginning, your actual bid is just $102.50 (ebay generally increases the price in increments of $2.50). If someone else bids a max bid of $125, your bid increases to $127.50, because your max bid was still more than his. Now, if someone else comes in with a max bid of $175, they will initially top yours by just $2.50 - ie $152.50.

If your max bid is bigger than his max bid, you cant lose. And there's no real way to predict what someone's max bid is, except for rebidding (upping your supposed max bid each time) until you finally beat them. Thats part of the problem, people double-think their max bid when they get beat...

Again, was the price you got beat by more than the cheapest one on abebooks? I doubt it...

Also using the above example, if you bid $150 max early, but your opening bid is $102.50. If someone bids any amount over your $150 max at the closing seconds, they could win the auction from you for as little as $150.01 (if their max amount bid was $150.01). If their max bid was anything more than $152.49, then their final price would end up being just $152.50.
