Old Third Cavalry Museum at Fort Bliss
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I just got an e-mail from Joe DeMarco, he sent me this scan from book WW II Sites in the US (published in 1996).

Some items that dont appear to be there today?

Hi Neil! Hi Folks!

That is correct. None of that equipment is still here at Ft. Bliss. When the 3rd ACR moved to Ft. Carson, it took all of it's musuem items with it.

Spot report!

I remember going to the museum back in the 70's. Thanks for the memories....

I remember that display back in the late 70's / early 80's.

Neil, I have a few low-quality pictures of me and an old Army buddy in front of tanks there. They are M-4, M-24, M-41, M-48, M60A1 and an M551. If interested I'll post them.

Please do! I need to confirm what Fort Carson has....

I assume the M60A3 above is not the same one that is at Kit Carson Memorial Park?

That picture was taken at the 3d ACR Museum at Fort Carson. I thought it was an M60A1 minus searchlight??? Looks like there is no thermal shroud and a ball can be seen (below) from the searchlight mount.

Looking at that Sherman - it appears to be an E9 version of the M4A3 (judging by the fender extensions on the sides and the standard bogies). I thought that this might be a rartiy but looking at the AFV registry, I guess it isn't really. Appears to be several out there on display - I have only seen an M4A1E9. From Hunnicutts - only about 1000 kits were procured for remanufactured tanks. Did any of the E9's see action in WW2? The Sherman in Mark's other photos appears to be a 76mm HVSS version whereas the old one is a 75mm version.

I wonder where that tank is today?

Neil,
'Weed is right, She's an M60A1 RISE Passive. Add another to the list. Wonder if they are going to move them to Hood when 4 ID moves back to Carson and 3 ACR goes there???

Holy Cow. I registered just to respond to this thread. That M60A1 is my old commanders tank from D Co. 1/3 from the late 80's. If it's the same tank then I stripped the commo from that thing and replaced the antenna's and antenna bases with non-working ones for display purposes. The last commander of that tank was Capt. Michael D. Formica from around 1987 or 1988 whenever we transitioned from M60A1's to M1A1's. What a blast from the past.

Hi Folks!

The 3rd ACR had a number of 75mm Sherman tanks for a number of years while at Ft. Bliss. A few months before they moved to Ft. Carson, all of them, if I remember right, were turned over to the post musuem because the 3rd has never used that version of the Sherman. Two or three of them set by the old museum warehouse next to the USMC reserve center for a long time before they were traded to other musuems.

When the 3rd moved, only the 76mm Sherman was taken to Carson.

Mark, do you have any photo of Carson with a 75mm Sherman?
