Visiting Aberdeen in April
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Some random notes from Aberdeen

Inside the Refurb faclity are the Vickers Mk VI light tank, the Mae West, and the Firefly. The Firefly is in the 'paint booth and is scheduled to be stripped to bare metal this week. I had a chance on Friday to meet with the folks that work there friday morning when I also had a peek inside the Firefly turret. The 17pdr fills up the space!!! The recoil shield barely fits inside the turret ring and the gunner better be a skinny dude!.

The supervisor said he would take plenty of pictures and give me copies. It turns out the hull of the Firefly is the first ALCO produced M4A2.

The Mae West had an inline GM Diesel engine

We had about 40 people between the two groups. I think every vehicle in the Belair street yard had at least one person concentrating on it

The HVSS DD Sherman was developed for the British for the invasion of Japan. At least two were built, one sent to the UK.

Chris, it was great meeting you!

BTW, I'm trying to remember - was there something you were looking for, pics or some subject you were interested in... Feel free to send me a PM...
Likewise; we'll have to do that again sometime. Wink You may be thinking of someone else with the info request. I don't remember making one (which doesn't mean I really didn't...).

Joe, here are the pictures I took. Like I said, my battery was dying while at the warehouse, so there's unfortunately not a lot of the vehicles there.

Folks

I have removed the 'sticky' status from this thread. The events are over so I did not see a reason to continue to give it the special status. As long as there is discussion it will stay near the top, then it will slowlyfind it's way into the older topics.

Post subject: Thanks

Hi Bob:

I had a great time on Saturday at the Belair yard. Thank you very much for arranging that for us - I really appreciated being able to get close to those vehicles (especially the Sherman DD). It was nice to be able to put some faces to the names on this board as well.

Cheers and thanks again,

Scott Taylor
