According to Ron Fry, “Rusting Away in the USA, Military Machines International, Vol. 6, No. 4 (September 2006) there are 2 M60A2s on the ranges at Fort Knox - ie in the areas you can hunt in...

.....hmmmm, maybe I need to look into a new hobby,.....and perhaps 'go hunting'.....

Don

Mah, you need to take Road Runner with you and tell them you'll be hunting for Coyotes!

As promised.... From Ron Fry, “Rusting Away in the USA, Military Machines International, Vol. 6, No. 4 (September 2006):

The first one appears to be in decent condition, just stuck in the mud

The second one not so good condition... Or at least the hull isnt...

That first one looks like an M48 gasser engine deck

That's the M60A2-turreted vehicle that is/was at the tracked vehicle recovery site here at Knox. I remember having to hook up the tow cables to the tank.

You gotta point there... The second one also appears to have "M48" written on it, but I cant confirm from what's left of the hull as to what it is...

Hi everyone,
Rob, was it when you went through BMOC recovery course at GMD range just west of Muldraugh?? They also had an old M1 there too, either a PV/ or XM-1 I believe, never got a good look at it.

Bob, Neil, I can't view the pictures right now but I'm pretty sure they are both M60A2 turrets on M48A0/A1 hulls like the Valley Station KY beast. When the Army got rid of the A2's and started using the hulls for AVLB's they put a lot of the turrets on old gasser 48 hulls that they had no use for anymore. Made it easier to dispose of them as hard targets, just tow it to a range. Besides, what fun is a hard target without a turret to knock off ?

I might actually have time in one of those turrets.

...worse yet...maybe even one of the hulls! Shocked

(going to bed now in Lisbon...totally depressed at that thought. Sad )

Hi Folks!

The top one is a M48 mo-gas hull. The bottom one however is possible a M60A2. It that is an old M48 hull, it's an A3 version because it has the rear grill set up for a diesel engine. Look at the left rear edge of the hull. You can see the hinges for the missing grill doors.

Update/correction:
Something I though of between home and work was there was no CB55 on the underside of the rear hull. Clearly no way that is a real A2. Didn't notice the mounts for the support rollers. That is a major point to confirm the original hull type. Good one Joe.

Hey folks, I think we all should start calling Joe D, Mr. M60!
My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

Hi everyone,
M48 hull, you can tell by the bolted on support roller spindles, there are also more than 3 which would make it an A3/A5 hull instead of an A2/A2C. That along with the cuts in the hull sides for the external air filter housings for diesels. It doesn't have the re-enforced square tail light housings either which leads me to believe it's an old A5 hull. First one of those A2 turret beasts I've seen using that kind of hull. That's my slightly educated guess anyway.

Neil,
Sorry for the late answer. I have no idea where the ROBAT is now or even if it still exists in original form. The picture you posted on the other thread sure looks like it.

Joe, thanks for the info. FYI, I will try to make a point of getting the SN off the Ordnance Museum's M60A0 this weekend...

Hi Folks!

For those who have no idea what a XM1060 Robat was (like me), check out the following modelling site for an OUTSTANDING 1/35 scale Robat.
I cann't read the lingo, but the pictures are good enough for me. Click on the smaller photos for a larger view.

New one on me too, Man.

"The XM1060 ROBAT, with a tele-operated M60A3 tank for a platform, was configured to clear mine fields and mark cleared lanes and also to detect chemical, biological, and nuclear agents."
