How do you recognize Half-Tracks variants?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: How do you recognize Half-Tracks variants?

Hello,

While updating the France AFVs register, a question went into my mind : How do you recognize Half-Tracks variants, such as M3 White, M5 International etc.. Are there external elements which allow you to recognize the variant without any doubt?

The difference between M2/3's and M5/9's is pretty easy. The fenders are shaped different and the rear of the troop compartments are shaped different. The M5/9's have a flat shaped fender and the troop compartment is curved in the rear.

Oki, now I perfectly see the difference between M2/M3 and M5/M9, thanks. Any possibility to recognize an M2 from an M3?

Yes,

the M2 has a step between the end of the fighting compartment and the fender, the M3 has a flush end, the fighting compartment ends with the fender. Also, unmodified, the M2 has side stowage doors behind the driver doors, but this is a feature that was deleted occasionally during refits, rebuilts and modifications.
