Tankland #2 - M50A1 Ontos, M56 Scorpion, USAF M114
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

M50A1 Ontos - I found the SN 398 for Don...

M56 Scorpion

Here's an odd "Lingle," an ex USAF M114 - Craig said it was used to represent threat radar or something like that. Couldnt find any SNs stamped on the rear on this one...

I saw some of these M114's at White Sands. Something was mounted in the right rear and they had cut out cooling vents for it. There was a sign that said "DANGER-RADIATION" or something like that.

Neil

Thanks for the call the other day. Also to Craig, for being patient with my requests via long distance. Cool

Although brief, I was happy with the new information. Hopefully I can obtain the other SN's for my index. Talk about a plethora of empirical(sp?) data!! Rolling Eyes

(What actually constitutes to much information anyway...??) Mr. Green

I'm gonna make a new diagram of SN locations and add them to the SN sticky above. It will be more informative to my previous effort.

Thanks
Don

Where...???
HERE ? (pointing down at the floor)

...or THERE ? (pointing at the computer screen)

I'm looking at an April trip to Auburn Indiana.

I figure I'll do a 'short halt' at Camp Atterbury and nightover in the vicinity of Crawfordsville, Indiana. Obviously a personal photo op at both locations.

Then on to Auburn. Did the Musuem (Auburn/Cord/Duessenburg) back in 1991, really want to do a repeat visit as well as Victory Museum.

Do you have a photo bucket/webshots/ etc account that people can see all these great pictures you're able to take for all of us that don't get access to this cool stuff. If you do could you let the rest of us go there. Personally I like your pictures as a great reference for building models Mr. Green Because you take great detail shots

Did you notice the bumper # on the M56? Right front fender 'MACV' (??) Left front 'S06' ??

If original paint, does that indicate attachment to MACV in Saigon?

D Co 16th Armor (173rd Arbn) had the M56 till removed from service in 1967-ish. Gotta dig up some Vietnam photos now,.... Seems to me they should have been marked with 173rd Arbn being the higher command.

I wasn't aware that they would have been at MACV. Perhaps some vehicles were retained for Headquarters Defense support. (ideas anyone?)

I do know that D Co 16th Ar went ACAV and (I believe some M551's).

This is a subject that has 'haunted me' as I do have undocumented information that 173rd maintained some Ontos in 1970-ish, following USMC final removal of Ontos in late 1969/early 1970, from Vietnam.

That would really throw a wrench in 'Sparky's' theories, if the Army had , in fact, conducted combat operations using the Ontos. Finally disposing of them when those vehicles finally wore out.

Possibly indicating the existance of some Ontos hulls remaining in Vietnam Rolling Eyes , only to be scrapped or condemned to rusting away into oblivion.

Hmmmm Mr. Green
