Few years ago (about ten years), I chartered one of those to take the steelwork of a circus from STN to Spain (Bilbao I think, I can't remember now).

Anyway, when the thing arrived the loaders refused to load it because they were.., "busy".

So, my client, the three drivers who brought the stuff to the airport, and I, spent the next 12 hours (started at 21:00 gmt) hand-balling everything up the ramp and into the back.

When we finished, a body fell down the steps at the front of the aircraft and made the internationally accepted motion to offer us a slug from his vodka bottle.

That was the Captain.
His Co-Pilot had to drag him back into the cockpit and they took off two hours later.
The last time I saw the Captain he was sleeping.
I left thirty minutes before they did.

Somehow it all arrived safely.
My client was supposed to fly out on the same aircraft in the jump-seat but felt it best to decline at the last moment and caught a red-eye passenger out instead.
He told me later that he'd he met them on the tarmac by which time the Captain was unconscious and the First Officer wasn't far behind.

I've had similar meetings since and often wonder whether they're just pretending. If they are, they do it very well (and their breath would burn the tusk off an elephant).
