OT but Tanker Related-Wearing of .45 shoulder holster
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: OT but Tanker Related-Wearing of .45 shoulder holster

When I was tanking, I carried a .45 in the issue shoulder holster. It has been years since I have worn one. I received one in the mail the other day from a friend and for the life of me, I can't remember just exactly at what point below the arm it is worn. I haven't been able to find any photos or diagrams showing the correct manner of wearing this holster. Any help guys?

I recall two ways, and maybe different holsters. Standard issue I recall was directly vertical over left shoulder with the second strap horizontal around the back and chest, holster itself diagonal below and in front of left armpit. More-or-less on left chest.

Also seen a rig that was purely diagonal and went over right shoulder, with or without second strap. Both arrangements I'm describing assume a right-handed shooter, but never seen shoulder holster worn otherwise.

I had and wore....some....but never liked and reverted to hip holster when situation allowed.

Hi Tanklord! Hi Folks!

- Tanklord

I received one in the mail the other day from a friend and for the life of me, I can't remember just exactly at what point below the arm it is worn. Any help guys?

If I remember right, there is a loop at the bottom of the holster that the belt for the pants goes through and holds the bottom edge of the holster against the body.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

Doug, the first way you described is how I remembered it. Took some getting used to, but it beat carrying an M-16 when I was enlisted (54E).

Roy, the belt loop is there, but since I now have the physique of a Human NBC seal for an M1A1 (i.e. I fill up the opening Laughing ), I will have to forgo that part.

Thanks guys.

Too old to die young, but too young to feel this damn old!

Hey Joe, that's the way I wore mine. I just need to let it out a little bit in the strap! Laughing

And Joe, remember retirement is for the rest of your life, try not to do it all at once! Thanks for your service!

Okay, had to throw in on this.

Jan 92 Korea (Op Iron Focus I) I'm listening to the Super Bowl broadcasted over Military Radio. (Super Bowl Monday!!)

Jan 93 - Ft Hood Tx 3/8 CAV - 1st CAV)

These are all with M9 (9mm). I tended to always modify my holster, to keep it from dangling or getting caught on stuff. like Joe's (10 up & 2 Down ) Cool Shocked photo,.....thats not under your shoulder!!! Rolling Eyes

Hey Don,

That 9mm had to be brand new in Korea for you. We had .45's up to about November 91 from what I recall. Wore mine that way because it was simpler to take off. Only time I actually put it on was outside the tank. Didn't believe in "Dummy Cords" either. Just something else to get you hung up. Now days they all are using the ones that look like telephone cords that stretch. Never used that on either. Just a royal pain if you gotta change magazines, and again, just more crap to get hung up on. You know the old saying, "Dummy cords are for dummies, hence the name."

I Like the battle board. Change the 4 to a 3 and you'd have mine when I was in "Deuce Tank"

Oh, for those who didn't catch it,......

" 10 up & 2 down = 8 up !!"

(or 'ate up' as in screwed up, messed up, FUBAR,.....

Cool Laughing

With that nonstandard cammo pattern, you could easily hide that 66ton brute in the third panel of a daily cartoon strip. (Always partial to the strip with the little boy and his stuffed tiger where they had more fun than ten grownups ever could .....)
