AFVs in North Dakota
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: AFVs in North Dakota

Here is some more info on AFVs in North Dakota. A couple of weeks ago I did a swing through North Dakota to try to visit all of the AFVs there on Neil's AFV Register. I found them all except the privately owned M29C in Grand Forks. Here is the resulting info that I found.

Anamoose, M42 Duster at Main St & Ave D (N47 52.798 W100 14.455), sn 1376 visible on a data plate on the rear of the hull.

Dawson, M60A3 at Lake Ave & Thompson St (N46 52.047 W099 45.066), sn 4048M, rn JJ01T9

Forbes, M60A3 beside Legion Post 277, on 2nd Ave, just off Main St (N45 56.627 W098 46.874) I could not read a serial number, but the registration number was clear on the hull front, JJ00XP.

Galesburg, M114 at corner of Dakota Ave & Beech St (CR16) (N47 16.190 W097 24.482) This vehicle has 419 stamped under the rear left lifting ring, and 433 under the rear right lifting ring, although according to other posts on this forum, these may not be serial numbers.

Larimore, M4A3 Sherman in Centennial Park at the corner of Towner Ave & 7th St (N47 54.646 W097 37.442) sn is 12558, not 836 as reported in the AFV Register.

Lidgerwood, M42 Duster in Memorial Park at the corner of Wiley Ave N & 2nd St N (N46 04.683 W097 09.155) Number 1636 is visible on the rear hull data plate. There is also a nice AH-1 Cobra on a pedestal in the park.

Linton, M48A5 Patton at a War Memorial Park at the corner of 2nd St SE & Milwaukee Ave (N46 15.753 W100 13.813) Registration number clearly visible on the hull is JA00UR. I could not find a serial number visible anywhere.

Lisbon, M47 Patton at the North Dakota Veterans Home, 1400 Rose St. (N46 25.744 W097 40.720) I could not read the serial number through the paint, however there is a sign beside the tank which says the sn is 1121. This tank has the wildest paint job I have ever seen.

Maddock, M114 in a memorial park at the corner of 2nd St & Western Ave (hwy 30) (N47 57.686 W099 32.039) 1987 below LR lift ring, and 1996 below RR lift ring. Also, 2AE07 036 is visible below the left front light cluster. Again, I suspect that none of these is a serial number. Those with more expertise on the M114 could possibly comment.

Manvel, M42 Duster in a memorial park on Oldham Ave. (N48 04.514 W097 10.618) I could not read the sn.

McVille, M114 in Sherman Quanbeck Park on hwy 15. (N47 45.650 W098 10.030). 1105 below right rear lift ring, and 1128 below left rear lift ring.

Napoleon, M60A3 at Legion Post on Broadway (hwy 3) (N46 29.806 W099 46.087). Serial number 2882A is clearly visible on the left front tow lug, and the registration number JJ04X1 is clear on the hull.

New Rockford, M47 Patton in a memorial park on hwy 281 (N47 40.965 W099 07.516). Serial number 3454 is clear on the front tow lug, confirming what RinoQ recently reported. This tank appears to have serious suspension problems on the right side, where it is sagging noticeably at the front. Possibly a broken torsion bar or two. It has an Italian data plate on the rear hull, with the number 10, and the date 15-2-66 stamped into it. There is also a UH-1 helicopter on a pedestal nearby.

New Town, M60A3 and M114 in a park at Eagle Dr & Central Ave near the legion hall. (N47 58.829 W102 29.250) The M60A3 is sn 2868A and rn JJ04WM. The M114 had 355 under the left rear lift ring and 364 under the right rear lift ring.

Park River, M60A3 at a war memorial on hwy 17 in front of the Good Samaritan Seniors Center (N48 23.871 W097 45.346) The sn 2908A and the rn JJ04XT are both clearly visible.

Regent, M60A3 beside Legion Post 273 at Main Ave & 3rd St. (N46 25.234 W102 33.482). sn 2771A and rn JJ04T8 are both clear.

Sheyenne, M42 duster in a memorial park at 3rd St & Sunnyside Ave.(N47 49.524 W099 06.912) I could not read any numbers on this one.

Wishek, M114 in front of an armory at the corner of 13 St S & First Ave S (N46 15.476 W099 32.894)

I hope this helps any of you out there who are crazy like me, and printed a copy of the AFV Register so that I can ink amend it as more data is reported. Neil, I hope this will all help with version 3.1 in the future. I think we have North Dakota well covered except for any more new finds like the M42 in Aneta.

Is this in a park or ???

Is this at the American Legion post?

Okay, with that kind of statement you need to post a picture...

Here are the answers to Neil's questions. Sorry, I should have been more specific about these.

Anamoose; Yes, this is in a park at that corner.

Dawson; As RhinoQ wrote, it is in a park across the street.

Galesburg; This vehicle is on a concrete pad at the main intersection in a very small town. You really can't miss it. It is not in a park of any kind. Nearby is the S.B. AASEN Post 210.

Lisbon; Attached are photos of this M47. This appears to have been brush painted in place, as they even painted the tracks and the rubber on the road wheels. Anyone know the story behind the paint job?

Leave it to Doug to reference Woodstock(I think),

Reminds me of those non-conventional ROK Army Camo jobs they used. My guess is someone wanted a "Cool" paint job.

Alf,

Is it at all possible to post left side pictures of M60A3's?

I haven't seen any of those except the Parkton tank.

As far as covering ND, I think you've got it. But I'm willing to bet there are more AFV's out there in front of Armory's. They don't make the TACOM list. Not sure if there is any listing for those.

Here are some left side pictures of M60A3s from Forbes, Napoleon, and New Town. Hope they are helpful. Only 1 is a real side view. I mostly take front and rear angle shots and then close in for details.

Alf, please let me know if there would be any problems adding your New Rockford photos to the entry on PreservedTanks.com - thanks.

Done - many thanks:

With each photo there is usually a link to the contributor's own website - what happened to your excellent Preserved Canadian AFVs page, I can't find it any more?

Larimore, M4A3 Sherman in Centennial Park at the corner of Towner Ave & 7th St (N47 54.646 W097 37.442) sn is 12558, not 836 as reported in the AFV Register.

Lemme guess: the turret had a large "836" cast into the side or top?
