The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Had to go to Memphis this morning,

So I made a side trip to Brownsville on the way home.

M60A3 Brownsville TN

SN is 3719A, RN 9B7441. Former M60A1 3233. Located at 35.597450, -89.231670 TN ARNG Armory, Transportation unit.

Hull SN

Notice the back deck is from SN 3717A. I though the SN sounded familiar so I checked my records. 3717A is located in Jackson TN, and guess what, She had the back deck from 3719A.

I wonder if the "A" is for Anniston?

Nice history. I wonder if they meant to swap the decks (or didn't notice until afterwards!).

Most likely the latter. Doubt if it was intentional, happens all to often in these MATES sites with the National Guard. They do services on a group of tanks and place the decks in another part of the bay. They all look alike so it's easy to grab the wrong one. It's not like it's a matched item for fit. It wouldn't be hard to correct the problem either though. Six bolts on the rear and four with an "E" shim by the turret ring (Which usually were never tightened and the shims missing) and it comes off.

It's sad then that they didn't correct it.

While unlikely, not impossible. The tank in Brownsville is about 25-30 miles from the one in Jackson. IIRC, the Guard maintenance facility is in Jackson, just down the hill (within eyeshot) from the M60 monument. I lived in Brownsville many years (in fact, many of my "get around to it MV restoration projects are still stored there), and the Guard for years ran a M60 in the Christmas parade.

Best wishes,
David Doyle

Welcome David!

Again, what is the main difference between the A1 and the A3? Razz

Thanks for the welcome guys.

The A3 had improved rangefinding and a solid state ballistic computer.

Regards,
David
