Anyone have any info on what kind of headgear South African AFV crews might have used in the action against Angola and the East Bloc backed FAPLA?Some pics online seem to show a 1980s US AFV headgear in use, whereas others seem to have a modified British AFV rimless helmet of British vintage with commo gear added on. I'm working on my Cromwell Models Olifant, and I'd like to depict a crew, so I'd like to know for sure. Thanks in advance for any insights. Regards, Michael Karnowka

There are some pictures with South African tankers in their CVC helmets. I get the impression that these picts are from the 90s, but I think that the helmets are the same. I have Helmoed-Römer Heitman's book "War in Angola: The Final South African Phase", and the (few) pictures in there showing CVC helmets show them to be the same type.

These South African CVC helmets are similar to U.S. type in construction, but are overall much slimmer looking. I feel like I've seen them before . . . French? Anyway, they definitely are NOT U.S. CVCs.

CVC one - I have one that someone used in Angola - person served in the Olifant MBT.
