Post subject: New addition to the family

Well you know how every year some families get a dog or puppy for their kids for Christmas thinking it'll be cute, and then it doesn't work out so they take it to the pound to get rid of it? My wifey brought this up yesterday so we boogied down to the local animal shelter to check things out. We've been talking about getting a companion for our current dog (also from the local animal shelter) who is going kind of nuts by himself and starting to turn other-dog aggressive, which isn't a good thing.

I'm really happy to report that at least, this early in, our local animal shelter had lots of people looking and very few animals to choose from...this is a good sign for them. But as we were there, sure enough, in comes a little pug dog that had just been picked up a week ago, the story was it just didn't pan out and the dog had already become overly protective of a baby that the family had.

The wife wanted a "small" dog that wouldn't shed as much as my big ugly dog, and this one seemed to have a good temperament, and training him would be no problem, so we adopted him and took him home...probably set some kind of record for the shortest stay at the pound that any dog has ever had.

The last day has been something else though....my dog was going nuts and growling and foaming and just wanted to eat this poor little fella. My dog would snap and lunge at him, and of course the little fella would do the same in return. A lot of it was excitement on my dog's part about being around another dog again, and we spent the day walking them (didn't work), introducing them slowly (didn't work), and just kept being patient about it. I finally took my dog for a another two-hour hike to just tire his butt out and wear him down....by the end of the night we had them checking each other out peacefully through the kennel mesh (we kept each of them kenneled inside the house, taking turns), and sniffing and wagging at each other. Finally they spent the night in separate kennels right next to each other and that did the trick.

When I let the little one out this morning, Jack (my dog) started whining and howling to be with his new buddy, and the new dog did the same. So finally the moment came to let them both out together, carefully, and man I gotta tell ya, these two guys are the best of buddies. They've been inseparable all day long, running around tearing things up like dogs ought to be doing, horsing around and wrestling, and there hasn't been one warning growl or snap between them yet.

So I was telling my wife it's like one of those things were fate steps in and takes over....if she hadn't suggested a trip to the pound, and we hadn't gone when we did, my dog Jack wouldn't have gotten a great christmas present in the form of a companion, and man he sure needed one. Also one less dog imprisoned in the animal shelter.

I also had a hard time saying no about him because the curly tail tells me he's part pig, and what's not to like about that?

So here's "Tuco".....who seems pretty jazzed about the whole schmiel too.... Smile

(Looks like the little one is liftin' his leg on my wife's foot) Laughing

Thanks gents! I forgot to say that the little chingasso isn't a pup, he's actually full grown (hard to believe, I know)....they figured his age is between 1.5 and 2 years, and apparently he was given up to the shelter by another family previously before this last. He's said to be housebroken, and for the most part that's true, although he's got a tendency to want to mark territory in the house...that'll be changing fast and he's gonna have an appointment to get 'fixed' soon, poor fella.

"Tuco"...he's good, he's bad, he's ugly. There could be a movie there. Wink
