M60A3's still in US Service
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Found this article,

I knew of these two back in '97. I am glad to see they are still in use.

Stevens Pass Washington

Here are two pictures from Soldiers magazine. The article was about the transfer of the tanks to Washington's Dept of Transportation.

1) M60A3
2) M60A3

Not sure where they got "105mm Recoiless Shells" from.

Probably a historical reference to what the author was familiar with. 105mm RR's (and some 106's and even 105mm howitzers) fairly littered the intermountain west for avalanche control, usually in road passes and ski areas. Now the ski areas mostly use propane-fired charges or delivery by hand and helicopter, but a few of the old guns are still out there rusting away.

Stevens Pass,....been thru there a number of times.

Having lived in Oak Harbor Wa for 4 years (94-98) , I had read of the use of 106mm RR in the Passes. Even saw some video of their use.

I heard that the Tanks were replacements for the aging RR's, since there was plenty of available Tanks and especially ammo.

During the course of my Ontos research, I discovered a Washington State safety flyer on the use of the M40 106mm RR, for avalanche control.

Regards
Don

Since I've logged many a satisfying day in the last 30 years on the slopes of Alta Ski Area, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah:

The Canadians use the old fashioned, but perfectly appropriate 105mm Howitzer C1 firing along Rogers Pass for avalanche control.
