The Sherman Serial Numbers database
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: The Sherman Serial Numbers database

http://the.shadock.free.fr/Sherman_SN.xls

hello,

As I'm not currently very busy, I like to do unuseful things... Mr. Green

So, here is a document gathering all the Sherman + variants Serial Numbers that I was able to find. This document indicates the SN, model and location.
The list summarizes the information provided in various documents :
The USA, Canada, Belgium, and France AFVs registers, the website
www.afvregister.org, Hanno Spoelstra's "Table of known serial numbers".

This document shows few SNs which are obviously wrong or incomplete, but it also shows interesting SN sequencies.

Any feedback, correction and/or addition is the most welcome.

Pierre-Olivier

P-O,
Great initiative!

A few observations:
1) I would suggest adding a column for Canadian Shop Numbers.
2) I would suggest adding a column for other registration numbers - such as British War Department T-numbers, Canadian CT-numbers, French RNs, etc.
3) I would suggest including Shermans you have RNs, but not SNs, for - since these usually can be matched up to SNs anyway...

BB-61,
Thanks for the info!

Two things would appreciate if you could confirm in Yuma:
1) Is there an M60A1 at VFW Post 8242, 7120 Hwy S 95? If so pictures, the SN, RN would be great!
2) The Crusader self-propelled howitzer and re-supply vehicle prototypes supposedly in storage at YPG? Perhaps the exhibit/historical office folks would know? Obviously only looking for info/pics from public areas of the post, not anywhere else...

A few observations:
1) I would suggest adding a column for Canadian Shop Numbers.
These Canadian AFVs should be listed in a separated sheet, IMO.
2) I would suggest adding a column for other registration numbers - such as British War Department T-numbers, Canadian CT-numbers, French RNs, etc.
This is a great idea
3) I would suggest including Shermans you have RNs, but not SNs, for - since these usually can be matched up to SNs anyway...
Well, as the RN is always suspect (because it is painted), I would not. The SN is the only information that is 100% sure and doesn't need to be confirmed, except when it is difficult to read, of course

I believe Kurt Laughlin or Joe DeMarco should be able to confirm the SN/RN matchups...
I already asked them for some help with SN/RN matchups, and also to know the manufacturer from the SN. This would be really great to get such informaton from them.

But in some cases we know the RN from documentation (but not the SN), not from what is painted... Plus, as I said, Kurt & Joe should be able to help with the SN/RN correlations.

Checking the list
SN 836 has the same RN as SN 811, further I can't find it anywhere in Larimore, ND.

Those range target details on Hannos site came from me. I have pictures of them but many of them are probably gone for scrap now.

I'll go through them and update the info.

Adrian,
I am mostly interested in which SN is/was at which target range. Do you have that info?

Thanks,
