Gigantic frame in the shape of "U"
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Gigantic frame in the shape of "U"

Dear Sir,
on some Chinese internet site, describing the construction of vehicles LeTourneau I found a picture. Chassis 4x4 with a gigantic frame in the shape of "U". The vehicle probably originated in the fifties of last century, and was able to extricate the trapped vessel LCM.

I'm looking for information about this car. I'm looking for the exact name.

Could this be one of the odd US Army landing vehicles being tested at Fort Story Virginia. The photo looks familiar..... 1960's maybe??

Looks like the same tires as the 'Overland Train' had.

The machine in question is the only one example of this rig built by LeTourneau. Built in November 1954, the MA-31 Landing Craft Retriever was tested at Fort Eustis. It could lift up to 67 tons, and its twin Detroit Diesel 6-71 engines drove generators, which then powered DC traction motors mounted at each of the four steerable wheels. It could operate in surf up to 8 feet deep.

Hope this helps,
David Doyle

LeTourneau always believed in bigger is better. They have built some of the biggest earth-movers and scrapers, many electrically driven. They also have built some of the world's largest jack-up drilling rigs, i. e. the "Super Gorilla" class.

Now that you mention it you can see the landing craft in the 'belly of the beast'.
