Friday in Richardson MP
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Changin speeds alittle bit. Here are a few additional vehicles in RMP.

The M31 which was recently moved from in front of the museum.

And a few Stuart Light tanks:

The vehicle on the right is SN 10069

Do the turrets have the same P/N cast into them?

KL

Kurt

Spent somemore time in RMP today and put together this little spreadsheet from todays visit along with Fridays visit.

I think the biggest info discovery today was a stamped SN that marks the pilot SN. All the original hulls were built as T29 pilots and then upgraded. I dug this out of Hunnicutts 'Firepower'. Primarily from the T29E3 reference that it was originally T29 pilot 8.

The pilot SN stamped is located above the Bow Machine Gun port. Anyone who bumps into any of the surviving Heavy Prototype Tanks can check for that stamped SN to verify its original SN.

The only Data Plate of all 'our' Heavy Tanks was in the T34, which was stamped on the Data Plate as T34 #2, even though it seems to have been T29 pilot #1.

Confused yet...?

If you aren't confused you are welcome to attempt to organize T95 serial numbers Mr. Green

Been there, tried that......Needless to say its a work in progress.

Actually I was reminded of the T95 headache when I was trying to organize this little spreadsheet. I'm not well read on the whole heavy tank program, but the limited vehicle numbers makes it a whole lot easier.

You could add the APG, Detroit Arsenal and Fort Jackson T30s to the list to make it complete Wink

APG T30: SN 1, RN 30162842
Detroit Arsenal T30: No info Sad
Fort Jackson T30: SN 6, RN 30162847

Okay, but.....

Is the SN for the T30s from Data Plate, meaning T30 #1 & T30 #6?

If so what T29 pilot SN or construction sequence # (just made that up,... Wink ) based on the stamped SN above the Bow MG ...???

Any turret cast #'s...?

I almost forgot the RN data,....guess I need to refine my little Heavy Tank List.

I'll work on that.

BTW on the XM800-T, I found a stamped SN '003' on the right rear of the vehicle beside the upper tow lug. with the absence of a data plate, I think that might be the prototype SN.

Good question... I would suspect its the "data plate" SN, although for the T30s I'm not sure they received new SNs from what I see above?

Anyway, the APG T30 info is from the Museum inventory logs, corroborated by Trevor Larkum's info and Hunnicutt.

To make things even more confusing... At one point (cant find in the archives anymore) we discussed identifying T30 SNs by cast numbers on the rear of the turret - which would match up for the APG T30 at least.

I'll admit I'm having some trouble identifying the source for my Jackson T30 info... But its clearly not from the data plate or a bow SN stamp... I've had it in the USA AFV Register since V1.0, so its likely from the museum or some other reference work.

I was just comparing a few of the T30 vehicles data. If available numbers were arranged in order, perhaps the the Knox T30 is #2 thus the RN would be 30162843. If Jacksons T30 turret is made in sequence, then the turret cast # should be #6.

Of course this is all dependant on the fact that it was all done in numerical sequence,......something which doesn't seem to occur very often.

Guess I need to dig thru any available T & E test photos to see if I can ID some existing vehicles.

Unfortunately, the rear of the Jackson T30 turret is a little different. The cast numbers may be covered over, or if they are the ones that are in a slightly different place - they're 3 instead of 6...

Dont forget to check against Hunnicutt...

Don,
Did you happen to get any clear views of the "wobble stick" arrangement for the driver on the heavies? Other period views I've seen of this are not as clear as I'd have wished for.

Best,
Doug

Doug

Since access to Drivers Compartments were a bit restrictive, so I only got this shot of the T29E3 controls & panel.

Note: As seen on the Gauges
Miles 395.8
Hours 732.4

I'll try to get better coverage on future visits.

Heres a few more references from the pages of the T29 Manual:

And after crawling into the T34 Drivers Compartment this morning....

Is that enough....?
