News from Ft Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Is that building in right frame what used to be the original PX?

Not sure if it was the PX, thats abit before my time. It is the 'One Stop' (in/out processing) building.

Chaffee Ave merges with the traffic circle just to the right of that building. (if that helps)

Don,
On a slightly different topic, what is happening / will happen to all the former range targets at Fort Knox?

I'm curious since every so often something recovered from "behind the fence" appears on the main post at APG...

The Knox range targets include (at least):
4 M1 Abrams
1 M2 Bradley
1 M2A1 Bradley
4 M47 Pattons
5 M48s with M60A2 turrets
1 M59
1 M60A1
1 M60A3
1 M103A2
1 M113
1 M577

Plus several ex Patton Museum German vehicles that probably dont survive - although it would be cool if they did:
PzB Bergepanther
Sd.Kfz. 251/9
StuG III

PURE URBAN LEGEND !!! Wink

But, whatever pops up after Sept 2010,.....is fair game... Mr. Green

To answer the question,.....I have no clue as these are 'owned' by Range Control. Not a part of the Armor School but an installation function that will continue after all the Active duty tanks leave. The KY ARNG & Reserves will still train here, so I assume the tank ranges will not be bulldozed over for 'walking paths' for the 'grunts'.

Oh, you forgot two V100's that I have personally climbed in & know there exact whereabouts. As I recall they were fairly omplete and 'dumped' on the side of a tank trail. Unfortunately I don't have any photos,....sorry. There was also at least 6 stripped-down mortar tracks in the same vicinity

I'm back, I'll catch up asap. While up north I tracked down and photographed the Comet on the beach at Saltfleetby, and the Chieftain outside the Manby Motorplex. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the Chieftain 900 at the Yorkshire Air Museum, so if anyone has photo's of it please get in touch.

What I can do, is do a reshoot of all the Heavy tanks on the same day. Currently the T29 & T30 are statically located infront of Marshall Hall. The T29E3, T34, T43, and M103A2 are located in RMP.

Regards
Don

Don,

The T43 is new to me - I didn't see it in 1983 - so I've added it as a new entry:

Unique ID 1312: Fort Knox T43

- please let me know if you have any other information about it (e.g. when it arrived or where from).

Trevor

The T43 is pilot #1 ( 1 of 1, I believe...)

I have no other info on it. It has been here as long as I have been a volunteer ( 2001 ).

It looks so much like the M103 that I originally thought it was just another M103 worthy of being a range target. It does have a ladder welded on the right side of the turret.

I do have a few more recent photos, that I'll see about posting in my photobucket.

Nice stuff Trevor. Here are a few notes to update your latest entries.

- TrevorLarkum
More additions (I'm currently working through the light tanks):

Unique ID 1299: Fort Knox (Museum) M41A3

- it came from Letterkenny so I've started a Letterkenny entry:

Letterkenny Army Depot

The M41A3 was stored for a number of years in the LST building. It has since been relocated to Richardson Motor Pool, where it is currently located awaiting transportation to Ft Benning, Ga

This M41 is currently located in RMP.

QM41 is in RMP

This M24 is now in RMP

Unique ID 1305: Fort Knox (Warehouse, previously Museum) M24

- this one ('The Phoenix') appears to have been a French veteran of Algeria, so I've pieced together a likely location history, as can be seen on its map, and added some background links.

This M24 is on display in the museum

Regards
Don

All done - thanks for the updates.

- Dontos

This M24 is currently located at Ft Benning Ga. It was transported in one of the convoys several months ago.

I have begun the process of creating an entry for the new museum and moving vehicles across to it. I have started with this M24:

National Armor and Cavalry Museum, Fort Benning

I appreciate I have a lot of catching up to do, with many vehicles already moved, so I will work on the other vehicles whenever I get the opportunity.

According to my info this is SN 2762, RN30121290, and has been repainted as "Rebel's Roost."

SN and new name added, thanks.

Photo added, thanks:

Unique ID 1305: Patton Museum M24

This M24 may be the one located at the 'Chaffee Gate' (on Bullion Blvd)

Is there any way to confirm this? I can see in Google Maps that the one outside the Officers Club has gone. However, Neil's USA Register (June 2008 edition) lists M24s at 'Brick Mess (Building 1118)' and 'Bullion Gate', so maybe there was one at Bullion Gate already? Do you have any photo's of the one at Bullion Gate so I could try identifying/matching them?

Unfortunately the location of the M24 near the gate prevents decent photos of it. The gate guards get real paranoid as with the M1 & the M2 that are closer to the entry gate.

However I'll see if I can get something to include SN data off the vehicle thru 'semi-official' channels.

As for the 'Brick Mess' I don't know what that is, or how old that sighting was.

There was an M24 at the Brick Mess around the late 90's. It's the place we sometimes called the "Leaders Club" when I was there. It's real close to the CG's HQ building and behind the old theater there.

Here's where I saw her last in 1998.

Ah, okay

There is nothing in the area of the 'Leaders Club'. If an M24 was there, it may be the one used at the Chaffee Gate (Bullion Blvd) when it was rebuilt/upgraded between late 01 - 04.
