M577 APC
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

We have an M577 that is being demilled for the Museum in Calgary. It was a runner, but they are taking the pack out to preclude it running. One item that is missing is the entire generator box up front. We think we can replicate this, but need the dimensions. Anyone near one and can get the dimensions for us? Thanks.

I imagine someone can help you out with this, and some of these might even still be in service.

Are you going to display it with the ramp down and tent attached? That would be wicked cool (and wicked big, but never seen it done for display, would really be unique). Just parked as a box doesn't tell anyone how the thing was actually employed.

Unfortunately it will be sealed up. There are 7 vehicles from the M113 family going on display-all will be demilled and sealed. I'm not at all for it, but new rules have come down to re-apply the old standards for vehicles on public display. This was due to an unfortunate incident that occured a few years ago at another museum down east. Big hammer fixed the problem. I'm hoping someone who has access to a museum vehicle will be able to help us get the dimensions for the gen rack. The 7 vehicles will be M577, M113A2, M806, M548, TOW U/A, Fitter, Dozer, and the Lynx already here.

I wish I knew about this earlier today. Having spent 8 hours photographing & assisting in loading vehicles at the Patton Museum, I had ample access and time to get the deminsions off of our M577A1 that had previously been displayed with 'tentage'. ( Rolling Eyes )

Its packed up and awaiting to be shipped to Ft Benning, Crying or Very sad BUT, I will be working in the Museum on Saturday, so I can get all the measurements & photos to help "y'all". If you need any other details, let me know.

I don't know how one would acquire one but these generators were all replaced a few years back with a newer type. So somewhere there is sh**load of these generators laying around. Most would still be operational since they were likely in use when replaced. The replacement was done at Anniston Army Depot, Probably by BAE Systems, but I don't know how you could get one unless you search the US Government auction sites. Anyway, Anniston should have plenty. Am I remembering correctly that these were gasoline generators? The new ones are diesel and run off the vehicle fuel supply. I think they are also armored.

I agree, somewhere in a scrap yard, there is a pile of these generator boxes, but the chances of finding them is almost impossible. It's actually more practical in real world terms to just replicate one. We're not looking for a generator. As I recall, they were gasoline powered and not run from the vehicle fuel supply. We have a new version for the new M577 variation. I see that this site is difficult to attach photos to, tried but it keeps telling me that they are to large. (?) No problems on other sites.

I thought you were looking for the generator. I worked at a warehouse at Anniston and we had the new generators in stock. They were $52,000 apiece if I remember right. Lynx, I will resize those pictures if you want to send them to me. Then I'll send them back to you so you can post.

Not really, it's done all the time. Which of the following methods are you using?:

1. Free hosting service, like Photobucket or Flikr, etc.

2. Using your own free gallery here (get to it via the "my account" panel)

3. Most likely in your case, trying to "attach" a file to your post. These will get by our resizing software and not allow attachment. If you resize image to 800x600, or the next larger size (1074x768 or sumthin) it should be fine.

If you need help setting up your "gallery" here (you get one for free, but no offsite hot-linking) let me know and I'll help. Free hosting services with hotlinks should be automatically resized to site specs.

Interesting, but be advised when takeing any interior shots of the TUA, it would be OPSEC, and if you work with the Museum any posted interior of operational vehicles would follow the same as above.
