M46 Patton Reference - exterior + interior
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M46 Patton Reference - exterior + interior

Hello all.

I am building a high definition 3D model of the M46 Patton tank. I have decided to make it as close to the real thing as possible but have run into problems in my reference material: they are all different from each other, so I have no idea what's right and wrong.

I do have parts of the manual, the Osprey/Signal book but the drawings are not very good. I found some M47 drawings but they just add to the confusion.

I hope you can point me in the right direction of measurements, drawings, blueprints of the M46.
I have dug big deep holes in the internet and information is very scarce, unfortunately. Do you have or do you know anyone that knows someone who have such material?

Unfortunately, I am nowhere near a real M46 I could crawl unto with a measure tape Sad

I am keeping a photo log of my progress here: picasaweb.google.com/s...K6hy-HazwE - there's also an explanation of how the Dyer drawings are out of sync.

The model is dedicated to Bill, my friend who drove the M46 in Korea. I am recreating his very tank. Further, I am donating this model to the National Armor and Cavalry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if it would help but there are some M26 photos at
www.ferreamole.it/imag...m26_01.htm

At the bottom of the page is a link to some photos from the manual.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the manuals are not drawn to precise scale; I am told this problem goes all the way back to the Sherman.

If you are prepared to travel, there are some M26s in Germany - for example at Sinsheim:

sinsheim.technik-museu...6-pershing

and Wiesbaden:

virtualglobetrotting.c...?service=0

There may well be ones further north.

Edit: I've just remembered the excellent register by P-O and Rafal with a more complete list:

the.shadock.free.fr/Su...shings.pdf

plus there are some M46s in Belgium, courtesy of Rafal, P-O and Massimo:

Thanks!

Time to get out the calendar, have a look at the Avis site and get on the road! Exciting!

Here's a link that actually works. I am halting this until I have crawled on the real deal in Brussels.

Hi Michel -

This is an M47, notice the hull has three track return rollers, the M46 has five. The muffler is slightly longer on the M47 as well. It is not easy to retrofit the M47 turret to an M46 hull, because the turret ring diameter is four inches/101.6mm larger; the prototype M46E1 was a one-off modification to fit the T42 turret, but I haven't seen any evidence of fielded M46s being retrofitted with M47 turrets.
