Neil,

We had a grand adventure exploring Camp Mackall and tracking down the AFVs. That we had any success at all is thanks to Mrs VB suggesting we “just ask those guys over there”. LOL!
We talked to a local fisherman and he sent us in one direction that, after a few “Hmmm, let’s try THIS way” turns eventually lead to a guard post staffed by a former M1 tanker who gave us precise directions!

Location info as follows:

Historical Marker
Ashemont Road & 501/15

Camp Entrance – UH-1, sign, memorial
Intersection of 11th ABN Div Rd & General Ridgway Rd
35.036889, -79.468428

M60 SN 2086
Intersection of 17th ABN Div Rd (gravel) and Operation Varsity Rd (dirt)
35.0145 -79.4765

Target Range/Field area with T72, BMP1 and BRDM2
35.017161, -79.458833

T72
35.018167 -79.459

BMP-1
35.0185 -79.4595

BRDM2
35.0195 -79.4585

Road to take off of US 15/501 to get to Target Range/Field area with T72, BMP1 and BRDM2

Cheers!

Hello,

France Historical AFVs register was updated today. It took me 2 full days to do the updates and to review all the links contained in the document, to remove/replace the wrong or dead links..

http://the.shadock.free.fr/France_AFVs.pdf

A new version of The Netherlands AFVs register will be reviewed and put online on next Tuesday, Michel Krauss sent me the updated document few days ago.

Admittedly, I am employing the term "AFV" rather loosely. A textbook definition (derived from definitions for various AFVs used in the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty and the UN Conventional Arms Register) would be "Self propelled vehicles with armored protection, a variety of armament, and cross country mobility." But in practice that can often be difficult to apply to specific vehicles. For example, I have a hard time determining whether various WWII high-speed tractors or German half-tracks were really "armored" or not. So I tend to err on being inclusive, unless its clearly something that is not armored (such as unarmored trucks and HMMWVs), or a vehicle. Armament can be rather more "fudgy" since an APC may not necessarily need any armament.

But to answer your question more directly, yes, I would include Up-Armored HMMWVs. I already have a couple on the list from Camp Pendleton.

Question regarding the Register.

As the term AFV been defined somewhere here in the forum in regards to what is wanted in this register? For example if they put a new "Up-armored" HMMWV in front of the new regimental school house on Fort Lee does that count? I only ask because I saw there was one of our "Gun Trucks" at Eustis on the 3.0 list?

VB, thanks for posting. If you look at the aerial view, its clearly outside an armory - lots of big, green trucks behind the building. The google map address placement is often approximate, a little off in this case.

Found this browsing for airports on google, and it doesn't seem to be on the register, M60 AVLB? Rock Hill, SC

34.978193,-81.063993

The given address for the armory is 126 Museum Road, but that looks like it's too far up that road to be accurate.

Neil,

I couldn't find out anything more on the Pompano M53. We drove by the crane lot and poked around but didn't see anything. Ran out of time before I tried calling the crane office. Sorry!

VFW Post #9564 Pine Level NC M110A2 SN BMY1217 is located at:

35°30'55.56"N
78°15'0.68"W

The Wilmington M114 looked like a home-built. The hull is metal and may be genuine. I couldn't get close as the lot was chained up and store closed at the time we stopped.

What do you all think?
