'Fury'....whose tanks are they using...??
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

[...] Bovington Tank Museum’s very own Tiger Tank is not only up and running but is now being hired out to the producers of the new Brad Pitt film, ‘Fury’ currently being shot in and around the village of Shirburn in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside here in the United Kingdom. Along with an American Sherman M4 also on hire from this ground-breaking Museum, this superb & almost breathtaking Tiger will add a sense of realism with its sheer power & stage presence on set.. indeed Bovington’s Director of Operations, Richard Smith, said the Tiger was’ “one of the most feared weapons unleashed by the Nazis and was possessed of a formidable reputation as it could destroy an enemy tank from over 2km away..!”[...]

Chris, if you are looking for WW2 fiction, you may want to try Elleston Trevor's The Killing Ground, if you haven't read it already, that is. It's about Churchill infantry tanks and their crews in Normandy.

Jim,

Thanks posting on abandoned film based on 'Tramp in Armour'. I picked up a old library copy of the book to read. I have been looking for more WW2 related fiction from the 50s. 60s and 70s. It was fun to read the book form of Kelly's Heroes and Navarone series this summer.

By the way, I believe people are posting that the film 'Fury' is based roughly on Stephen Harding's book 'The Last Battle'. I started reading that book this weekend and it's good so far.

Chris.

I've read that, it was a good book and got me really interested in AFVs. Sadly some of his later books are rubbish!

I remember being on location with Michael Caine in the late 70s IIRC doing a film about the crew of a Matilda retreating across France during 1940. It was based on a book whose name I forget but anyway I digress - they actually had a Matilda but it had no engine and all the 'moving' shots had to be it freewheeling downhill which made for some interesting scenes and much recovery work. In the end they abandoned production because of cost overruns etc.

Just remembered the name of the book - it was Tramp in Armour by Colin Forbes. Nice book well worth reading. published c1970.

A good mix of vehicles in that park, I spot JCs M4A4, TMs M4A2 76 HVSS, an M4A2 that I have seen before in the UK and the original German half track that looks like Bruce Cromptons.

Well, it's starting to look ever-so-much better...

"Pitt will play a battle-hardened sergeant named Wardaddy."

Even better, it also stars Shia LaBeouf. What could possibly go wrong? Laughing

so the Sherman turns out to be a big robot ....

It might be OK because a member of the cast is Scott Eastwood, son of Clint.

A real tough audience here...LOL

Give the movie a chance, I will. The 'long hair' photos are in the training phase prior to filming. At least he's trying to 'get in character'.

As for the vehicles, hopefully they do use restored vehicles and not vismods. BUT, its Hollywood, so anything is possible... Perhaps even a properly equipt tank movie...

At least its not George Clooney...LOL!!

Regards
Don

I'vez read that the film is about a tank crew during the last days of WW2. They are using an M4A2(76) HVSS or an M4A3(76) HVSS, so this would fit. However, the most common tracks for HVSS tanks in 1945 were steel tracks and not rubber tracks. The wood and sandbags additional protection on the tank in the photo below also doesn't really fit with what we can see in period photos.

P-O

I'm seriously cringing here. I'll be impressed when they get Brangelina "into character" by teaching him to bust track. Laughing
