Stolen Panzers from Bulgaria?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Stolen Panzers from Bulgaria?

I just ran across this in another forum (warbirds resource group) and I was wondering if anyone else had heard anything like this.

World War II Panzer tank stolen

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -- Police have arrested two German citizens and a Bulgarian military officer
accused of stealing a World War II-era German tank and attempting to steal another, authorities
said Wednesday.

Military prosecutor Hristo Tinev said the three suspects allegedly attempting to steal a MK IV
Panzer tank in southern Bulgaria on December 13.

They are accused of stealing another tank and smuggling it out of the country last month.

The two Germans, identified only as T.J. and M.M., and the Bulgarian officer, Alexey Petrov, face
up to 15 years in prison if convicted, Tinev said.

He did not give other details of how the arrests were made. According to experts quoted by the
daily paper 24 Hours, the tanks were unfit for combat, but valued on the antiquities market at up to
€50,000 (US$72,000).

Well, sure, street value. I just checked with Tyrone, my fence, who moves a lot of hot DVD players and power tools and the occasional vintage warbird and stuff for me and he says the market is so flooded with Pz. IV's right now, that he doubts he could even get me fifty points on that here in SoCal. Laughing

Yup, it was all over the armor community last month ( I seem to remember there was a post on here as well). Bulgaria is (right now) the largest (possible) source for a wide variety of German WW2 armor not dragged from the bottom of a pond or bog. These former "pillbox" installations include at least 3 Stugs, 2 or 3 Pz IV:s, one Jagdpanzer IV, a couple of SdKfz 251:s (unconfirmed) and last but not least ... 15 possible Panthers.

I thought it was probably the 'pillbox' panzers, but I wasnt sure. I've heard rumors of the panthers, but has anyone actually seen them?

No, they are either still there (in a still restricted military zone) but not found or they were scrapped, possibly as late as the early 90's.
