History Lesson ( ID test )
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: History Lesson ( ID test )

I ran into the two photos below. Both seem to be around the time of the Museums opening, in 1949. These are some of the first Vehicles displayed at the Patton Museum.

Can You find some interesting vehicles which are no longer here? (Knowledge of AFV register is a must)

Test Photo 1:

Test Photo 2:

Extra points to any correct answers as to the current location of those missing vehicles.

Have fun

I know, but I have an inside track, so to speak, so I will abstain from this contest. Smile

It depends on which corner you refer to.

Notice how the equipment and spare track brackets are still attached to the Panther? And the schuerzen fender/brackets?

Oh, I know exactly what you were talking about. I was just popping some smoke for other viewers. Wink

If no one bites by tomorrow, I'll post a response.

Lima Lima Mike Foxtrot,

Nice collection. Is that the museum that was located across from Boudenoe Hall? I remember when they tore it down.

Here is part of the answer.....

1)In the first photo, there are 3 StuG III & a StuH 42. Two of those StuGs are no longer at Ft Knox.

In the second photo, one of the StuGs is replaced with the RSO-Ost.... That means there is still 1 StuG which is not currently at Ft Knox.

2) One of the two Hummels is no longer at Ft Knox.

3) The Sd Kfz 251 (Pioneer) in the far right back corner is no longer at Ft Knox.

From Photo 1:

From Photo :

So,.... Here is the Question. Where is:

1) The Hummel...(an easy one)
2) 2 StuG's
3) Sd Kfz 251 (Pioneer)

In the second photo in front of the PIII (without tracks) on the right hand side, is that a partial RSO? The tracks and the size appear to be that, but the side panels look a little off.

Anyone know? BTW, we need more photos like these! Wow, 1949. Thanks Don! Wink

Yes in Photo 2 the RSO-Ost seems to have been swapped with a StuG III. Its a cute little thing. I have a few more, I'll post them in a little bit.

Don

I would like to have seen it as it was in '49, but that would make me older than I am...can't have that (wasn't even born yet).

I did see it in '71, however. Recall being allowed to crawl on the Panther (which, if I'm not mistaken, is the one I last saw lying fallow and stripped over at Richardson). Never saw many visitors there and I was virtually alone when I went.

I have no pictures taken inside the museum from those visits, but several from outside, with which you're familiar, Don. Wink

I suppose that Bell 47 is the same one that sat on a pylon later and is lying derelict at Richardson with the 2/17 Cav stickers on the bubble canopy? Found that funny as I served with 2/17th.

I had to include the 72 photo....

When I saw how the chopper looked in 72, it brought to mind a certain fellow 'lurkin' around it several years ago in Richardson. Cool

Oh check out the left skid...

....I've actually had the chance of tinkering with that same M60. Fired several hundred rounds of blank ammo on the rear of one of our ACAVs during the 'Armor in Asia' reenactment several years ago. She really 'sings' (even with blanks) Wink
