Preserved Tanks in Brazil
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Preserved Tanks in Brazil

I've taken a temporary detour from working on Preserved Tanks in Netherlands, but will return to it very soon. I am currently researching preserved tanks in Brazil as I may have to visit Brazil later this month, so I'm looking into what opportunities there are for visiting tank collections while I'm there. I'll finish this in a couple of days, and then get back to PTIN and answer any recent questions.

Meanwhile I'll post what I've learnt in case it's of interest to others. I've mostly researched online, but also found the Renault FT, M3 Lee/Grant and Italian light tank registers by Pierre-Olivier and Massimo very useful (P.-O., I've got some updates if you're interested).

Preserved Tanks in Brazil

I haven't found many usable photo's (though I've been able to capture some from Google StreetView) - if anyone has any photo's they'd be much appreciated.

Thanks for the lead, Doug, I'll look into 5RCC next. Are those photos yours, and if so can I use them?

They are and you may. I have some others of the same vehicles, from different angles. Sadly, one year, they had a sort of green Christmas light array on the Stuart for the holiday. The M60A3's were active duty vehicles at that time (mid-2000's).

The M-41 is a "Caxias" (M-41C) and has the upgraded Scania engine and extended deck to accommodate it. I believe that's also the low velocity 90mm gun.

Trevor,
You should contact our former Brazilian poster, Reginaldo Bacchi. He used to work for Engesa, and would come up to me at trade shows like Eurosatory LOL... Unfortunately he didnt quite make the transition to the new forum from the old one some years ago. I'll e-mail you the last e-mail address I have for him.

I am still not 100% about the info I have on brazilian L3 tanks. I have the strong feeling there could be more, not listed in the PDF.

Trevor,

I would be glad to get some photos from you if you are lucky enough to get access to the tanks during your visit (most of them are located on military bases).

I would be curious to get photos from the Sherman tanks too, especially from small hatches versions.

Trevor,
Mo' betta' angle of the gate guard M41C. I have several without the unit info, but that sort of adds something for your purposes.

Coordinates can be seen at bottom left.

Do you have a date or dates for the photos?

I also found this picture which you and Joe might appreciate, taken on the road behind the base:

Thanks for the leads guys. However, I found out this morning that the trip has now been put back until at least September, and that might mean that someone else has to go. Therefore I'm going to finish putting online the stuff I've already researched, and then I'm going to put Brazil 'on ice' and get back to Overloon and PTIN.

Understood, though I haven't yet found any that you didn't list.

Yep, January '05. At least that's when I was home to download from the camera. Might have actually been taken in Dec. '04, a week or two before. I'm pretty sure it was the same Christmas as the "killer tsunami".

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in Brazil

The M3 Stuart pic might have been a year or two before. It took me three tries to get a "sanctioned" tour of the whole post with the CO. Gate guards and even lieutenants don't want to take a chance of "doing something wrong" where a foreign national is involved. Strings were pulled locally and I got the $2 tour.

Some of the M3 pics were taken "at a distance" in the previous years (meaning covertly through the car window). When first approached, the guards didn't even want me taking pics of the M3 and M41, which are actually outside of the post gate. OPSEC, you know. Laughing

Somewhere here on C-C I think there's a whole thread on my visit there, you can probably search for it. I withheld some pics then at the CO's request because he was kinda' embarrassed about the state of some areas of the motor pool. I think it's been upgraded by now, and I know he was promoted and moved on up.

Rio Negro is right on the river (guess which one Laughing ) at the edge of the state of Parana. Immediately across the river is Mafra in the state of Santa Catarina. Colloquially, it is often called "Rio Mafra" because the two towns are essentially one, separated by a couple of bridges across a hundred meter span of river.

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in Brazil

Trevor,
You should contact our former Brazilian poster, Reginaldo Bacchi. He used to work for Engesa, and would come up to me at trade shows like Eurosatory LOL... Unfortunately he didnt quite make the transition to the new forum from the old one some years ago. I'll e-mail you the last e-mail address I have for him.

It was noted over on Tank-Net that today is his 81st birthday. As there is a "happy birthday" thread there, I offered my congratulations and invited him to have a look in on this thread and contact me if he has any registration issues.
