Composite Sherman in South Africa
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

There is something funny about this M4... The engine deck appears to have been raised, probably to accommodate a new engine (?).

This example has been modified locally, by fitting a large V8 Mercedes Benz / Atlantis Diesel Engine 442 twin-turbo diesel engine.

Wow, that's a lot of engine! I wonder how the horsepower of that engine compares to the original? My money is on two or three times the original spec. Still, it's good to see that someone is trying keep the old gals running.

I wonder why they put a 105mm turret on it?

It's an interesting kitbash, all right. Sherman IC Hybrid hull (note plug over hull MG opening), 105mm turret and new engine... Which btw develops 400hp according to the link Pzkpfw-e posted.

Probably stuck the 105mm turret on it, because that was what they found lying around?

So were these turrets ever used on the composite hulls when they were new?

By the look of it and by the fact that there were a number used by South Africa after WW2 that Sherman was a Firefly, both the bow MG plug and the hinge points for the 17 pdr travel lock can still be seen on the rear deck, back left hand side. Pity they couldn't find an R975 radial to make it sound right, there are lots about. Having said that, if the engine and turret mods were made in post war service then it is equally important as wartime configuration, it's all history!
