Two more 'turtles' at Ft. Lewis
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

The first is outside the new home/buildings of 2/14 CAV (which may now be an aviation squadron). It's sort of unusual, having armored air cleaners and a number of M60A1 features. There is no serial on the tow lugs, but I shot those on the side of the engine deck.

The second is beside the Ft. Lewis Post Museum, but not in the vehicle park area. This and the CEV are actually on the opposite (north) side of the museum, sitting in the grass looking sort of homeless. The S/N for this tank was stamped into the glacis.

(The M728 CEV doesn't have any obvious s/n markings on it.)

Enjoy!
C

Neil,

The two M4A1E8s that I've found aren't at the museum. One of the M60s isn't at the museum either. I'm not sure about the M48 turret deal...I'll have to look closer. I just posted pics of both on this forum.

Add an M728 CEV at the museum, in the background of the M60 pics I posted.

I don't recall seeing the M47, but I'll keep my eyes open. The M103 I posted pics of here.

The M551 is gone, I don't know where. It left sometime this week.

Add two M3 half tracks, one of which is a (maybe) runner, and a BRDM. One M3 and the BRDM are near the former 2ACR museum, and may be scheduled to depart.

Also add an M114A(Something) Lingle, pics of which I posted here, which is not at the museum.

The museum has an M5 tractor. Pretty neat. I'd never seen one before, and I'll poste pics when I get time.

Several pre-WWII cannons and an M101 cannon at the musuem, and an M198 on display elsewhere. A Gamma Goat and a DUKW also at the museum, as well at the HUMMV prototype and the 'dune buggies' that the 9ID used in their experimental light infantry days.

The Type 69 is actually a Type 59 (complete with glacis 'hole') that was captured in the first Gulf War. It's part of the 25ID memorial beside the museum.

Hope this helps,
C

Chuck, thanks! Would you be ale to help with the locations of the M4A3E8s, other M60, and M114? Buildings (names and/or numbers) would be great, as well as roads/intersections.

Chuck,
Nice finds, It's not unusual to find M60's with late model armored air filters. They did get rebuilt locally at CSMS shops or MATES sites. The old side loaders and aluminum top loaders eventually could not be repaired due to lack of parts so shops ordered the newer cleaners to replace them. I saw an aluminum one have the cover ripped off during services and we had to replace it with the armored one (M60A1). Then it had one of each. Also the old side loaders you actually washed the filters much like a K&N filter for a car. As far as serial numbers go, No question 1209 is correct, but 3332 cannot be, M60's ended with 2205 and the M60A1's continued the line with 2206. The numbers are found on the left tow shackle (Right side if facing the tank) but are usually so covered in paint they are hard to find. A lot of times I take out my knife and scrap them to the bare metal to find them. I do paint it it when I'm done. M60's registrations generally start with 9B too so it's not that either.

I got the 3332 number from the pic above, so from your message it must not be the SN...
