Fort Bliss 1st Cav Tanks
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Here's my first of many Fort Bliss pictures. I believe this is the 1st Cav's "Experimental Brigade Combat Team". Cool

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

- MarkHolloway

Here's my first of many Fort Bliss pictures. I believe this is the 1st Cav's "Experimental Brigade Combat Team". Cool

Hey Mark, the Experimental BCT (EBCT) is part of the 1st Armored Division, not the 1st Cav. If those are 1st Cav, then they are left behind tanks. If they are 1st AD EBCT vehicles, then a tank company must be standing up. 14 Bradleys only arrived last month while the Infantry Company has been here sense late last year.

AFAIK, the 1st AD EBCT only has an Infantry Company and a HHB of an artillery unit at Bliss. Check the base newspaper for the DWI report. While the DWI report list the Brigade as the 1st, an article in the base newspaper a few weeks back reported the troops where assigned to the 5th BCT of the 1st AD.

Nice to see you are getting out and about! More pictures please!

The current 1st Cav Bde at Bliss will be reflagged as a Bde in 1st Armor Division.

That makes sense, Sabot. Thanks. Their guidon should qualify for frequent flyer miles. It sure gets around Smile Roy, there were several Bradleys in the same compound. I hope to get in there and take some more pictures if it's allowed. Biggs Field is one big construction zone. The place is jumping I went to see the office I report to tomorrow (at Biggs) and the area was not even on my GPS. All new stuff. Plus they are building the "Biggs spaghetti bowl" interchange. Lots of exciting stuff going on. Smile

Hi Sabot! Hi Folks!

That IS the plan and it makes no sense to me at all. The BRAC plan calls for the 1st Armored Divisions (1st AD) to move here from Germany and stand up five BCTs and the 4th Longknifes BCT to relocate to Ft Hood. WHY did they assign this new 4th BCT to the 1st Cav Div? After standing up, building some history here and then turning around reflaging it as 1st Armored Division BCT. Why not make the BCT a 1st AD unit to start with? That way the history being build up now will not be lost when the 4th Longknifes BCT colors get transfered to Ft. Hood. The unit is one of the new UofA type 4th Brigades. What difference does it make if it was assigned to the 1st AD (which is one of the last two divisions scheduled to convert) to start out with?

It's to bad that history could not have play into the latest BRAC. I think the 1st AD has far more history at Ft. Hood than the 1st Cav Div does. The 1st Cav first stood up as a division here at Ft. Bliss before going overseas. Sense it started here, it's to bad the rest of the Division couldn't have been relocated here and the 1st AD returned to Ft. Hood.

As long as what ever division is here is a heavy division, I will be happy to start seeing AFVs again. After the 3rd ACR left, the only armor here was some M7 Bradley Linebackers and now with the new BCT TOE, even those are gone.

The idea behind standing up the Bde under 1st Cav colors is so that the Bde has local divisional HQ while they stand up and they can pull cadre from the division. Units rarely "move". One unit is stood up at the new location and the old unit is deactivated at the old one.

A couple of true physical moves was the 3rd ACR to Carson and the 5th Mech to Hood. The rest are stand ups or reflags.

Like the Bde that is supposed to stand up at Knox. It was originally designated 5th Bde 25th ID, but would eventually become 3rd Bde 1st ID.

I went through one unit stand down with the 1st Bn 63rd Ar, 1st Inf. Div. at Ft. Riley. We packed up everything and shipped all of it to Ft. Bragg. There we stood up as the 4th Bn 64th Ar, 82nd Abn Div.

After we got there, we unpacked all kinds of items related to the 1/63. Sense we were no longer the 1/63, just about all of it was thrown out. About a year later the 1st Inf Div returned from Vietnam and one of the tank battalions at Ft. Riley was reflaged as the 1/63. Sense we had throw almost everything related to the history of the 1/63 away, they had nothing to start with.

A lot of unit history is lost during those reflagings.
