M5 Stuart/M8 HMC's in Vietnam via French question...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M5 Stuart/M8 HMC's in Vietnam via French question...

Trying to track down possible origins of an M8 Howitzer Motor Carriage that was VISMOD'd to resemble M5 Stuart during Vietnam war as a gate guard for 11th ACR there.

I know M8 HMC served in Pacific Theatre during WWII. What do we know about M5 and M8 donations to the French (probably post war) to deal with emerging unpleasantness in Vietnam?

Thanks for any help...

D.

The French received many M5s, M5A1s, and M8s during the war, both as Foreign Aid and through intra-theater transfers. I would imagine these continued postwar as well.

M8 HMCs were widely used by French forces in Indochina/Vietnam during the Indochina war (1947-1954). There is a great chance that many examples stayed on the Vietnamese ground when the French army left the area in 1954.

Found this:

...the armor branch into four armored cavalry "regiments" (approximately the equivalent of a U.S. Army cavalry squadron), each containing one squadron (U.S. troop) of M24 light tanks and two squadrons of M8 self-propelled 75-mm. howitzers.
