XM800W at Eglin AFB, FL
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

You may remember I stumbled across this reference some time ago to an XM800W at an Air Force Base:

Well, it turned out not to be Tyndall, but Eglin AFB as I just found out from the Air Force Armaments Museum there. Here's the pic and two questions:L
1) How did it get used for EOD at Eglin?
2) Why is it painted that awful color?

Well, I guess #1 probably answers #2...

Hi Neil! Hi Folks!

Super photo! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

"1) How did it get used for EOD at Eglin?

Question 1, Better than using a jeep. Remines me of a photo taken during Desert Storm of a M-60A1 MBT with U.S. Air Force painted on the side. The story I remember was an Air Base EOD unit was using it.

Question 2, my guess is that sense it was used as an emergancy vehicle, that color was in line with it use. Wasn't tactical, so no need for a camo paint job.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

I've personally had bombs dropped on my location twice while working on an Air Force bombing range. So I think the color is to make you stand out among targets that are normally painted OD.

A vehicle like this would be good when driving on a cluster bomb range where there are dud bomblets all over the place!

I cannot help but think that the new German GEFAS has some influences from the XM800W (AND certain WW2 German armoured vehicles).........

There is a proposed version with the same 4 x wheels at the back to make it a 6x6.................

Regards,

BUG
