Post subject: 1st Cav museum aircraft

As many of you have seen, Iposted the Tarhe (Skycrane) previously and am now posting the rest of the aircraft at the 1st Cav museum here at Ft Hood. This week I hope to get to the 4th ID museum again and get pictures of all their aircraft. There's also a AH-1 in the town square of Killeen that I want to record. Hope you enjoy.

Jeff,
That AH-1S looks to have a "Blue Max" of F Battery, 79th ARA (Aerial Rocket Artillery). They were independent of 1st Cav in Vietnam, I believe, but maybe a part of it when the "S" was introduced. Can you get a closeup of that cross up on the doghouse close to the rotorhead?

Note: Nevermind....2/20th ARA used the "Blue Max" too.

It's be unusual for an ARA bird to have 7 and not 19-shot "sow pods" mounted. What's on the other weapons pylon (left side)?
(If they're just lacking for the old sow pods, recall that you and I know where there's about 12 of them crated and not being used Wink )

Nice shots...as usual (PM me your email when you get a chance...)

Doug

Jeff,
It tells me that they improvised with what they had for rocket pods, but an ARA bird would have 19-shot "sow pods" on it to make it a "heavy hog". Probably all they had on hand was the 7-shots.

HOWEVER, Ft. Irwin had a stack of sow pods in crates in that hangar where they kept the halftrack, with no apparent use for them. Wink
