"M551 Sheridan In Action"-color,by David Doyle now available
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

As I recall, about three pieces of line art (not plates/profiles) are carried over from Jim's previous work (hence he appropriately named in the credits).

All text, captions and photos are new to this book. There are fewer than a dozen black and white photos, all the rest of the photos are color, and, as mentioned earlier, there are several previously unpublished photos taken by Veterans such as Doug.

Jim's volume includes more info regarding the developments leading to the Sheridan - whereas I tried to provide more info about the M551 itself, including photos of each stage of prototype development. The title being "In Action" - the bulk of the photos are just that, the Sheridan in use, primarily in Vietnam, because it was there that the price of the vehicle's politicized and convoluted development was paid in the blood of GIs.

Hope this helps,
David

My print versions just arrived today (with that "fresh ink" smell Laughing ) and I'm very impressed with the quality of the photo prints especially. Decent paper, vividness of color and sharpness I usually associate with a more expensive "coffee table" book, especially in the sizes some of these pictures are (full page, in numerous cases). Like the color plates section of a Hunnicutt, IMO, and in some cases, better.

Really looking forward to seeing this book!

One of the most meanest looking AFV's of it time ... and still today. Mr. Green

The first view many of us had of a Sheridan was in AIT on M48's at Potts Motor Park, Ft. Knox. While we were performing maintainence, a column of about eight Sheridans came storming down the hill off Ft. Knox/N. Delaware St./Upton Rd. and turned left on Main Range Rd. Everybody's mouth dropped open and various exclamations could be heard. It was the most bad-a$$-looking vehicle any of us had ever seen. I mean, it bristled with badness.

Some of us were soon to get our wish...and you know what they say about that! Laughing

My time on that little Beastie was as an OPFOR troop at NTC, 87-89.

Turret was a POS with all sorts of issues, even though most of the stuff was stripped. Hull was a different story. One tough little SOB with the spirit of a mountain goat. Logged some serious miles in some very harsh conditions, and we sure didn't baby them. Weakest link in the drive train was the flex plates that held the flywheel together. Designed to shear when a driver got too crazy with "Sagger" drills. Prevented greater damage. Part of me was sad to see them go, another was glad the troops didn't have to endure it's PIA maintenance anymore.
