Post subject: Merry Christmas, forty years later...

Thanks to the efforts of three former commanders, this little piggies Bronze Star Medal award has been made official, effective 20 Oct 2011 for actions between 19 Sept 71 and 23 Mar 72. BSM for merit is a relatively low level (fourth highest combat) award but welcome nonetheless. Sadly, one of the officers making the recommendation passed away just a couple of months ago, so he'll never know the outcome of his efforts.

Surprisingly, the certificate itself (I only received copies today, the original go to my U.S. Senator's office for final disposition) bears the seal of the "United States of America War Office". I didn't even know we still had one of those. Maybe they had lots of forms left over from the fifties? Laughing

Wow, buddy! Congratulations indeed!!!! And thank you very much for your service! What 1Bullet said!

I'm sure there is an interesting bit of history about the actions behind the recognition you are being given and I would be extremely interested in learning about that, but I respect your privacy as well. My sincere condolences regarding the loss of a fellow soldier and comrade.

Thanks, Boss. It's a "summary of combat performance" citation, meritorious service in combat, not a citation for valor in a single action like knocking out three bunkers and capturing a platoon or anything. That would be with "V" device, which this is not*. In the greater scheme of things, it's an "attaboy" award, but of a higher order than an Arcom (Army Commendation Medal). When I get around to scanning it, I'll send you the citation, which is basically a paragraph.

*The BSM is exclusively a combat award, but may be recommended for merit or valor.
