1st Cav M60's
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

These three M60's are in the 1st Cav museum. I was esspecially drawn to the A3 model, looks wicked! The A3 had 7241 on the rear deck, but it was marked out, and you can just see 30794 lightly stamped in. The "JJ" number on the front hull was ground away.
The A1 (RISE) had 8800 on its rear deck and JJ01UK on the front hull. The plain M60 had 2953031 stamped on the front hull but I couldn't find any other numbers. Also notice the strange areas on the front upper hull, where it appears that two square mounts may have been at one time. Any ideas what these are from? By the way, thats an M48 with a 90mm gun on the far left in the rear shot of all the tanks.

Great pics Jeff, thanks!
Even before I saw your comment, I was wondering what those might be...

Maybe a dozer blade or mine plows/rollers?

I don't think that the marks are from an M728 "conversion", as they just don't match up with the one in this photo taken of a CEV at Ft Irwin. This CEV was an early M60A1 with the M9 dozer blade and only 291 were built. I'll bet someone on this DG will know though.

Mine plows or rollers then?

My guess is rollers, but I haven't checked into it yet.

Based on this close up from a pic of one of our Armor Board projects on an A1, I strongly suspect a mine plow/roller assembly had been attached here at one time:

...and this one on the far left looks funny for a 48. No rear grill doors. What's the sign say 'bout that one?

Early gas powered M48 and M48A1's didn't have the grill doors that A2's, etc. have.

Hmm... I though the 1st Cav Museum had an M48A5, as well as an M47... Does it have an early model M48 in addition to the 48A5? Or is my info incorrect?

They do have an M47, but I don't recall the M48A5. I guess I'll have to make another trip.....

If they have an A5, you can put that on my shopping list as well. They appear to be hard to find.

This is the lower section of the front hull, some grind marks but nothing that really stood out. I could find no M48A5 at either museum.

Hi Folks!

I would guess that a M48A5 would not be found in the collection of most active unit museums. AFAIK, only the 2nd Infantry Division used M48A5s and those were in Korea.

I would be looking for M48A5s around National Guard units. Confused
