Misc Guns
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Found this old photo (taken in 1996) at Ft Casey, Washington.

The Whidbey Island Washington 'pop-up' gun is the remains of the old coastal artillery defense system.

Thought someone would be interested in it.

That would be Battery Worth at Fort Casey - 10" guns.

The Coastal Defense Study Group is a good resource for this kind of info, especially their list of surviving modern-era fortifications:

www.cdsg.org/reprint%2...list05.pdf

And this section on their site of existing guns:

10" Disappearing mount, From about 1898. As the gun recoiled the arms lowered it into the pit where it could be reloaded with relative immunity to low angle naval fire (up until the 20s most capital ships could not elevate more than 15 or so degrees)

At most locations there were also 12" breech loading mortars in nearby pits to provide plunging fire on attacking ships.

Heres a rear view shot of the fortifications. The troop bivouc site was in the grassy area. The bunkers are all open and fairly intact. I saw a short video that showed the guns raising, firing, lowering, and being reloaded. These were never fired in 'anger'.

BTW: This is the site where 'Officer and a Gentleman' was filmed.
