From Chile...the Krupp "Not-quite-a-tank"
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

That looks like original carriaget & trailing arms on the GPF - I believe this is relatively rare... But surprising to find in Chile I suppose. Thanks for the pics!

Neil

They have one of these at Fort Morgan in Alabama (of "Damn the torpedoes - full speed ahead!" fame). That one has steel rimmed tires rather than the pneumatic ones seen on the one in Chile.

I guess it is still there - being that Hurricane Katrina went right through there. I was there a few years back. Haven't heard much on the condition of the fort since then - but I guess there have been more pressing items o concern in that area since. That, and it seems to have held up well since the Civil War anyway (with some hard work, I'm sure)....

Hi, Doug, Hi, fellers!

I didn't think it fair to chime in on the "two smooth..." mnemonic regarding the recuperator tape, because of previous droning sessions at Fort Knox to drum it into our thick 1962 heads.

Nothing like having that big ninety-mil gun run out of el stoppo, and compress your radio (and perhaps the gunner) to recyclables, eh?

Really nice Chilean Naval photos of their relics, though, Doug, especially the relic at the controls of the twin forties.... looks very lifelike and also well-preserved.

I think the silhouette on the mount is of a former US DD type, but can't say just which one -- definitely one of those old "up-and-over" types, where, in order to exit the fire room (boiler room to you treadheads) and visit the engine room adjacent, one had to go up the escape trunk to the main deck, shimmy through the form-fitting hatch, go forward (or aft), and shimmy again down the applicable next hatch, to access the desired fire or engineering space. This was in order to prevent a torpedo or gunfire strike from disabling more than one space (compartment to treadheads) at a time, due to the keel-to-main deck bulkhead being there to maintain watertight integrity. the distance between stacks is a giveaway.

I've been away lately, licking my wounds after the untimely death of my dearest Tommi, this July, and am just starting to seriously visit and chip in at this my favorite DG in the world.

Curmudgeons forever! Just BYOCJ (Bring Your Own Cherry Juice)
Russ

Hey Russ!
Glad to have you back...so sorry for your loss and troubles.

If the relic above seems well-preserved, it's probably the potent combination of Chilean tintos and Escuda beer...puts the color back in your jowls,. Wink

So, like, over in the other thread:
com-central.net/index....amp;t=4836

Craig, the big boss man of the El Monte armor museum discussed (including by telephone last night) our previously aborted plans for a rendevouz at his display and he says, "Come on", which sounds like a darn good idea to me. I'll look for your email in my old "inbox" (and send me your phone number again) and we'll try to work sum'thin' out. I've got a lot of travel pending, but we should put a day together over there in the next coupla' months....whaddayasay? He's got some mighty neat toys! (and seems a nice guy to boot).

I referred him to Neil's list in downloads...he might can check some details for possible updates...and maybe we'll get some numbers when we visit.

That's some mnemonic, if it stuck with ya' since 1962...you shoulda' piped up!

The twin gun mount in the bottom photo appears to be a twin 3"/50 automatic. The ship silhouette on the sign appears to be that of a modernized Fletcher class DD. A large number of Fletchers were modernized in the early 1950's, trading their wartime 40mm and 20mm mounts (and the midships 5" mount and one set of torpedo tubes) for three of these twin 3"/50 mounts.

David

Edit: One such Chilean Fletcher was Blanco Encalada, the former USS Wadleigh (DD-689).

Neil, as you can read on the information plate, those guns were given by the US in 1942 and were used as coastal defence weapons till 1998.

Speaking of....there's a whole feature (in which the webmaster is personally involved) over at Castle Arggghhh! ( www.thedonovan.com an excellent blog and great site for gun porn) on the repatriation of Fletcher-class and WWII vet, the U.S.S. Rogers, which was serving in Mexico as The Cuitláhuac and is now coming home (or actually back by now, maybe...was scheduled for August)

If you like these, check out the column and great pics (and a HUGE panoramic composite photo from dockside!) at the feature here:

Hey, remember the "Not-quite-a-tank" Fahrpanzer stuff at the beginning of this long-lost thread? Well, here's some more stuff I stumbled across that's the best detail since the loss of the old AFV Interiors site. Some good history, too.(and even a model, if you're so inclined)
