m10 destroyer with unusual add on
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Roofs were also sometimes added to Canadian M-10s.

The first photo (detail from PA-116525) shows a 3 M-10 during Operation Tractable near Bretteville-le-Rabet, France, 14 August 1944.

The second photo (PA-113687) shows a 17pdr M-10 on the Blackfriars Bridge across the Rhine River, Rees, Germany, 30 March 1945.

Some additional info from the “Gunners of Canada Vol II. During the preparations for Operation Totalize the M-10s of the two SP Btys of the 6th A/t Regt were fitted with armoured roofs.

(p311) “The M-10's of the two batteries thus employed (the 56th Anti-Tank Battery with the 2nd Canadian Division, and the 33rd with the 51st Division) had been given extra protection for the gun detachments by welding on a lid of armour-plate to prevent mortar bombs from entering the fighting compartments. The lids were constructed with a movable flap which could be folded back to give the No. 1 full view when required; when down it afforded complete protection from anything except an artillery shell.

I recently read some mention of U.S. M10s getting locally-made overhead protection while they were assigned to the (nearly impossible) task of infantry support during the Hurtgen forest battles too. There was a nice AFV News article on the topic of M10 roof armor several years ago, including drawings - I want to say it was written by Steve Zaloga but don't trust me on that. Not near my references at the moment.

IIRC, there was a common mod adding a roof in 6th Army group TD units (7th Army and 1st Free French Army) and some other units in 12th Army Group might well have devised a local add-on too.
