I do this all the time as a part of my job. Testing the detergent concentration (which is called the detergent alkalinity test) in commercial warewash machines (big dishwashers) I use Phenolphthalein which will turn the sample of water from the machine dark pink, Then I add HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) dropwise until the color goes to clear.. I use the number of drops of acid to caculate the parts per million concentration of the type of detergent used and adjust the chemical pumps to correct any problems. I also check the chlorine levels if the washer is a low temp machine ( under150 degrees wash temp)
I can also check the hardness of water by the same method only with different chemicals. BTW 0.0-.05 grains per gallon is soft water
12-20+ is very hard water. Odessa water is 30..... Rolling Eyes tastes like....well not good
Rankin TX is 70!! Shocked I don't even touch it for fear of turning to stone LOL

also you do the same stuff checking chlorine level in swimming pools

"Titration" is the more common spelling but it seems "tritation" is also valid, as a little looking revealed (new to me), Bullet . Titration is finding the stoicheomtric relationship between two reactants empirically, by adding one to the other (assuming you know the concentration of the one being added) until some indication of "neutralization" or "equivalence" is reached (colorimetrically or otherwise). This is often done in the context of an acid/base neutralization or similar reaction, but can be extended in principle to any of a number of reactions not expressly chemical in nature, such as antigen/antibody reactions (finding "equivalence", as in an immunoprecipitation reaction). If the reaction is known, as well as the concentration of the added reactant, then the concentration of the "unknown" can be calculated, or at least, inferred from the amount needed to neutralize it.

The ol' Ascout is a Medical Technologist...or clinical laboratorian by training, and has a background in organic and clinical chemistry and currently works in the field of autoimmunology.

Ascout,
You never know what you will read about on this site. I am currently working on a water problem for an installation of a reverse osmosis system and a grain water softener system that we plan to install in Ghana in April.

Any chance you can offer some helpful knowledge on desalination that could help me? If interested, let me know and we will discuss further.

Ascout,
You never know what you will read about on this site. I am currently working on a water problem for an installation of a reverse osmosis system and a grain water softener system that we plan to install in Ghana in April.

Any chance you can offer some helpful knowledge on desalination that could help me? If interested, let me know and we will discuss further.

lazyeight,
Wish I could, but it's really not my area...plus, I'm on my way out of the country on one o' my business trips (again Rolling Eyes ).

I would hazard a guess that your system is rather small scale and needs to be very energy efficient (energy efficiency not being a characteristic of large-scale desalinization efforts generally). I can't even recommend sources for your application because my area is really the laboratory and your app is scaled way up. A chemical engineer is who you need to talky to. Wink

thanks for the referance link..put that one on fav. as my spelling skills are limited..lol...actually the word I was looking for is similar, as many in the english language, and applies to reduction of dossage, a medical term, but interesting replies regarding though. Chemisty is a interesting subject, studied it a bit until flying got my attention in high school. Did you know btw that ASA, an active ingredient in pain killers, comes from tree bark. The native Americans use to chew on it to relieve pain.

ASA is just short for Acetasalicylic Acid...or salicylate....or aspirin. Wink

right about ASA..do you know the word for " reducing a dosage " like in medicine..??...thought it was tritate..like you tritate or reduce dosage with some medication you take over time. Do you know the tree the natives use to treat scurvy..they use to boil the dregs and apply it over swollen joints to help treat the sympyoms or reduce secondary inflaminations caused by scurvy. The early French and English explorers in Canada used this treatment once the natives showed them. The Vikings may of too as they were here long before Chris Columbus.

Curiously, all my attempts to "Google" variants of this word ("tritate") either yield foreign language websites (mostly Italian) or a very few lay sites dealing with pain management, usually referring to cannabis as augmenter...tritating up or down. I've never heard the word used medically in my 26 years in my corner of the medical field. I couldn't get a hit on any professional medical sites with this term, including PubMed.
Having worked in four acute care community hospitals, I'd have expected to have heard this word at some point if it was in common use.

"Googling" the word "tritation" just gets you hits that assume it's "titration" being misspelled.
