M4A1E8 Sherman Easy Eight

View through the MG port

That's it for my Fort Lewis historic armor. I also have pics of a couple of Chenowth FAVs, an XR-311, and General Dynamics' XM966 HMMWV competitor. Here's one poster I found amusing

Good question... Museum guy I spoke with on the phone said their M4A1E8s had come from Germany FWIW...

Looks like they put a spacer between the turret and cupola so the MG mount would clear the periscope housing.

Mount looks similar to the AA mounts the experimented with on the M48's, although this thing looks like a local kit bash and pretty ungainly. One of those "WTF??" oddities.

Yeah, really. Pretty strange. I've never seen that before, I'm sure it doesn't rotate ... does it. Confused

Lotta trouble for nothing making that thing if it doesn't.

The cupola looks vaguely familiar, but for the life of me I can't place it. I don't think it's for a Sherman, M75 APC maybe???

Neil,

I'd be very interested in seeing and having hi-res images of the XR-311 in particular. I got a little time on the final version of that at Ft. Knox and had corresponded with a collector in Japan who owns two of the originals...fully restored. I've posted low-res versions of some of his personal detail shots on occasion. Especially interested to see which "version" they have.

One of the sexiest vehicles ever contemplated by the Army. Morphed into the HMMWV, which you can see (if you squint).

Don't hesitate to PM me. I'll share. Laughing

The two M4A1(76) used to be (2000) in the middle of the base , side by side, next to an armor unit HQ. There was an M728 about 250 yards up the same road.

They've probably been split up since I'm fairly certain there are no more pure armor units at Lewis - just Stryker cavalry RSTA squadrons.

Kurt, do you know which one of these Shermans you identified as 52499?

Since they're A1s the only place to find the SN is inside right?

S/N 52499 would be the M4A1(76). I emailed the museum and their guy went out and found it on the dataplate.

At least with the PSC tanks, it's only inside. There are some externally visible build marks, but they aren't 1:1 with the S/N.
